Custom actions that I wish were still made.

Here is my other benchrest pistol. It has a Remington XP action in a McMillan stock. Obviously missing a barrel at the moment. They are really fun to shoot. This one too just rests in the safe.
There are a couple long range BR matches you could shoot them in. Not sure if they're twisted right to shoot bullets from 500-1000. MOA cold turkey is one match, its in Sundance, WY. The other is ABMS (I think), in Ohio.

accuracy man that xp is sweet also. Now I'm full of questions. What recoil lug is that and how thick? What trigger ? Finally what bag are you using? What did you have for a barrel and chamber? Thanks for putting up with all the questions.

I may have missed it but I don’t remember anyone saying they miss the Farley Black Widow.

John pushed the “Benchrest Pistol” thing to the limit. Every issue of Shooters News was chocked full of articles surrounding it.
Most Benchrest shooters said…….”what’s the point”.

to James’s point, one of the best actions, (material wise), ever was the original Farleys built on the cast 17-4 Stainless action body in conjunction with the S-7 tool steel bolt.

Two of my favorite rifles are built on these.
Jackie, I had one of Jim's first receivers. He would call and say he had an improvement and to send the bolt back, or firing pin assembly or whatever. I didn't know that I had a problem, but whatever. Jim did his fix and got it back to me promptly.

What trigger ? It is a Jewell trigger with bottom safety (pull~1.5 ounces)
Finally what bag are you using? The one in the pic is a Protektor but I shot it with a low ear Edgewood
What did you have for a barrel and chamber? It had a 6PPC barrel 1.25" straight

I hope this info helps.

Thanks Aaron I didn't know about those matches. They are definitely twisted wrong for long distance but that is an easy fix. I can spin up a barrel or two and have them going in no time.

An action I really liked was the Bruno...made for Bruno's by McBros Rifles (McMillan).

This one of mine was very nice. Well thought out angles on the locking lugs and lug abuttments made for a very smooth bolt operation. The firing pin was a bayonet style for easy R&R and the trigger timing was right on the money with just a few thou. of cock on close.

Good shootin' :) -Al

Howdy !

+1 on what WIll Henry said.

And, I'd like to add to the list.....

Wichita WBR1375. This was a fairly new benchrest action, back when I wanted Fred Sinclair to build my first full custom, no-kiddin' varmint rifle ( for use on groundhogs ).

I was going to go w/ a Davidson-sleeved XP-100, but Fred though I would be better served by the Wichita.
Mine is s/n 15.

I have had 4 different barrels on my Wichita, in 3 different calibres ( all for varmint / target use ).

The WBR1375 is a 3 lug, which was something fairly new in the mid-70's.
Fred put an M-16 style extractor in mine, and the action of course accepts Remington pattern triggers/hanger.

A nice, nice action !

Seely used one of those on his HV / Cruiser(1.25" /weights) He set a world record 10/100 with it.

Yeh.... Seely was a big believer in the Wichita. I think his experiences with them were one reason why
Fred Sinclair told me on my the first " custom " build he did for me; to " Buy the best, and cry once " !

It's a nice, stout action !

To clarify my previous response:

Fred did my first custom build on a Wichita WBR1375 single-shot action.

He did my first bench gun ( chambered in the then-new .22BR ) on a Wichita " Mini ".

I appologize if I was not clear on that.

I liked both actions.

Thanks for answering my questions accuracy man. Any preference of one bag over the other for the McMillan hatchet grip?

Looks like a Wilbur Cooper action?

If so, does it have the female cone in the receiver that mates with a male cone on the rear of the barrel tenon? -Al

As long as your bag is a single stitch bag it really doesn't matter. I prefer bags with longer ears for shooting this pistol because the grip is short. They are very fun to shoot.
