Which One

Bully

Silver $$ Contributor
I'm looking for a 22.
My issue is, I don't know which one to get. My guess is that at some point I will own them all. However, at the moment, I'm trying to pick my first.
Intended use is to have some fun. I have a ton of bulk ammo that I'd love to get rid of and if I can ping a little steel or shoot some eggs at 75-100yards and get some reps in on pulling a trigger that would be lovely. I've had several .22s over the years but am currently without one. Hence my current quandry.
I don't want to have one built. That much I know. I simply don't want to deal with sending something out for 'smithing and all the waiting and expense involved with that. I am not at all opposed to plug and play options, however. At least that way I have a rifle to shoot while I wait for whatever part it is that I want to switch.

Purpose will be all around fun with some moderate accuracy expectations. 1" at 50 on most days is fine with me using bulk ammo. Plinking and some backyard pest control are definite considerations as well. At some point, I will be running it supressed.

Do I get a bolt gun and have fun finding stocks/triggers/etc? I mean, a 700 pattern 22 does sound like a ton of fun.
Do I get a semi and swap out parts on the back porch to my hearts content? I know how much fun a semi-auto 22 can be.

I am turning to the wisdom of the hive to help me in my quest for a 22!!!
Thanks in advance.

Can't beat a CZ 457 for the money. My pick would be the Varmit model.

Quite a few of competitors at my longrange rimfire matches which they also use for PRS/NRL matches and the factory Benchrest class.

Just about any CZ 457 will exceed your expectations. You can refine it to your hearts and wallet's content. Mine only gets match grade ammunition, but 1" at 50 yards with bulk it likes is very doable.

The 457 will exceed your 1" @ 50yd expectations. You didn't say if you have a budget but consider bumping up to the bergara b14r. It already has a decent adjustable stock and you can add an R700 compatible trigger and have a pretty nice rifle. I would suggest getting the steel barrel vs. the carbon unless you're going to carry it around a lot.

Depends on your expected use. I have friends with the CZ457s and everything is available, but when you get done you will have far more money in it than you should. It will still be a CZ457 tin can shooter.

As far a 700 pattern 22. I used Remington 40X or Bergara B14R are the only ones from the factory gun. You have full customs like Vudoo and RimX. Nice thing about 700 guns, they take any 700 triggers and stocks. I have 2 B14R with Trigger tech Diamond triggers and love them.

As for auto's, I have a Kidd Supergrade 10-22. I got a complete barreled action and put it in a Titan stock with Titan's rear anchor. You don't have to go full Supergrade. BUT price Kidd's guns and parts, before buying a 10-22 and changing parts. The big cost for a Kidd is their 2 stage trigger, but it is the best 10-22 trigger made. You could get complete barreled action, less the trigger, for close to a new 10-22 would cost.

CZ 457 are very good guns and have a lot of after market stuff.

I have a Tikka T1x it will shoot anything ammo you put in it. I had it in a KRG Bravo chassis, but have it back in the factory stock, for factory class and hunting.

With the recent rise in popularity of 22lr PRS type shooting, tons of guys are upgrading left and right all the way up to the $2k+ rigs. If you put a WTB ad on here and snipershide/etc you should have lots of options of really nice rigs that someone paid to have built/upgraded. I got a cz 455 w/ the manners stock and LW barrel for a great deal this way.
As far as buying a new mid-priced rifle - if you're a member on this site, I doubt you could leave a stock cz/etc 22lr rifle "stock". You'll be breaking out the wallet and upgrading/tinkering in no time. Might as well buy a rifle that somebody already paid to have a lot of that done.
And then comes the decision on optics!!!
My two cents. Good luck!

OP - If you don't mind synthetic my recommendation is a Tikka T1x, if you are a traditionalist then a CZ 457 Sporter.

Both rifles are available in the $500 range and both are satisfyingly accurate for a sporter, the Tikka is a little easier to shoot from sandbags because it has a less rounded forearm which gives a flatter surface for riding the bags. Both handle well off-hand for plinking.

If you plan on lightening the weight of pull down to 2# or less then you will likely need a spring change on the CZ 457 (the lowest I could get mine with the factory spring was 4#).
My Tikka would go down to 1# 12 oz without a spring change. Should you need a spring change the Tikka is the easiest to change springs on but if you are handy the CZ 457 is not overly difficult.

I have had two Tikka T!x in 22 LR and one CZ 457 sporter in 22 LR. I still have one of the Tikka's. The CZ has more traditional looking lines but the Tikka was the one I kept picking up when I wanted to shoot the best groups.

I'm getting closer to either a 457 or a Bergara BA

I like to tinker. It's a problem...

I have a CZ Shadow2 for sale on here. If it sells I'll post a WTB, as it stands, I have a trade list on the ad.

Thankfully, optics are covered.

It looks like I stumbled in to a VuDoo barreled action w/ 18" barrel, brake, rail, TT "Special" trigger and 3 mags in trade for my CZ.

I'm gonna throw it in to a MPA chassis for now and see how it shoots.

My standard answer is always Anschutz........I built a dedicated AR22 no not quite as accurate as my Anschutz, but will hold its own against most, not all rimfires at 50 yards, and to be honest , it's possibly more fun then my Anschutz! Plinking or competition same gun, same trigger, to much fun.

I can't wait to see your voodoo held one at the NRA show I was impressed
