Combine Two 1-lb lots of Varget ?

Is there any reason not to mix two lot numbers of Varget? I would think that I may have more consistent results by condensing a few open 1 lb. bottles. Thanks for your thoughts .

When I have different lots of the same powder I chronograph each lot with the same load. If close then I will mix but if there is a difference that I am not comfortable with then I won't.

There are two schools of thought.
1. All powder is blended by the manufacturer and blending two lots of same powder will not cause a problem if mixed thoroughly and tested as a new lot.
2.
Egon: Don’t cross the streams.
Peter: Why?
Egon: It would be bad.
Peter: I’m fuzzy on the whole good/bad thing. What do you mean “bad”?
Egon: Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light.
Raymond: Total protonic reversal.
Peter: That’s bad. Okay. Alright, important safety tip, thanks Egon.

Could try mixing small amounts of each lot into one lot and test the "mixed" lot before doing all of it to see if it works. Not much wasted if it goes bad.

I don't use Varget but the other powders I use I blend all the time.
Blend (mix) well all in one 5-gallon pail, then check load- done, now I have my own lot.
When I get down to 2 lbs. I repeat with new powder if I can find it, check load, done now I have a new lot#.
A continuous cycle.

If we test the two lots with a well designed test, and they shoot the same... why would we blend them?

If we test the two lots and there is a significant difference... why would you want to risk your blending skills?

YMMV

If you are reloading for benchrest I would not do it as it could impact accuracy slightly. If you are reloading for anything else I don't believe it would hurt a thing since the burn rate from lot to lot for a specific powder never varies significatly.

I did this a few weeks ago.

That said, mixing powder effectively is important and most things people do to mix them don’t really mix at all.

I took a third canister and large funnel and slowly poured both cans through the funnel simultaneously, so that the kernels bounced around each other in the funnel. This helps ensure that at least the powder is evenly distributed from top to bottom.

For powder of the same kind, I think it’s sufficient to cover the lot to lot variation.

Unless a lot is defective ( meaning it should not be sold ) blend it. Use a large enough container to have at least 50% open volume to facilitate easy movement of the powder. We blended everything in industry to reduce variability and increase lot size.

I don't know if this right or wrong either but here's what I do. I keep using the lot until only a small amount remains such that it is impractical to dispense due to the small quantity remaining. I then I mix the remaining amount with the next lot so as not waste any powder.

Since I spend a couple of days on the range most weeks, I quickly find out if a load or scope adjustment is needed due to the new lot. I don't remember ever having to make any such adjustments however I'm not a benchrest or long-range shooter.

I wouldn't have any aversion to mixing two lots together but why do it when it's not necessary? Just use up the existing lot and move to the next lot.

It also just as well might shoot better.

I blend as much as I have into one “lot” and mark it as such with a date. Usually 8-12 pounds. I’ll collect a little here and there over time and keep it unopened until I shoot up the old lot of blended. Repeat.
