Any of you work at UPS?

I purchased an item from one of the site members and it was shipped to my PO box, but for some reason the address was changed to my home address. It had a new sticker printed by UPS covering the PO box address.

If you work at UPS do you know why and how this happened.

I don’t work for UPS.
UPS can’t deliver to PO boxes
Actually only the USPS can use your mailbox
That’s why you’ll see another box under the USPS one on a post outside your home
Usually for newspapers
Probably more info than you wanted

See UPS trucks dropping off packages at the PO many times.
Ups, USPS are a funny bunch.
Got an Attorney doing Probate for me.
I send him signed papers. His office has a street address maybe 1/4 mile from the PO. The PO will NOT deliver his mail to his office. All his mail goes to his PO Box.
I did send papers to his street address and they dropped it into his PO box. Had to see for myself. ;)
He's only been at that office street address for 30 something years. Maybe the PO doesn't know how to read??

Let me try and be as clear as possible. PO Box is short for Post Office Box. UPS nor FEDEX are the Post Office. The Post Office is USPS (which is the acronym for United States Postal Service). UPS nor FEDEX can deliver to a Post Office box (USPS) Why you ask? Because the USPS (Post Office ) will not accept a delivery to a PO box from UPS or FEDEX. (Some have been able on the local level to work sweet heart deals with the local Post Master because they are friends, but 99.9% of the time the above prevails)

When both UPS and FEDEX get packages to a PO Box (which has been a problem for close to 40 years now) they go to what is called a "look up clerk". This is a service they both offer to have someone check all resources to try and find a link to an address affiliated with the PO Box in question. If they do they make an address correction and charge back the shipper for this correction in order to finalize the delivery. If they can't track down the address they will send a post card to the PO Box letting the recipient know they have the package and they have 7 days to contact them and either come and pick it up or give them an alternate ( actual address) to deliver. If they don't hear back within 7 days it is RTS (Returned To Shipper). UPS nor FEDEX delivery centers are not warehouses which is why they only hold for 7 days. Most RTS shipments are because it takes the Post Office (USPS) more than 7 days to deliver a post card in a local area. This not UPS or FEDEX's fault! I for one am appreciative they go above and beyond to provide this service because of the users ( shipper) error. This policy has been in place at UPS since 1978 and there is still this problem today with shippers today!

Looks as though the op was lucky as they were able to cross reference the physical address to the PO Box. If this is irritating to anyone I would suggest taking it up with the shipper. If they were going to ship to a PO Box they should have used the USPS.

Not trying to ruffle feathers but I see many threads on here bashing UPS and FEDEX over user errors all the time. FYI I do not work at UPS but I did spend 20 years there (moved on in 2004) much of which was in their corporate office in Atlanta. The complaints they receive on a daily basis because the general populace never bothers to read or try to understand their policies is staggering, however they train there employees to smile and bit there words when they get cussed out by a receiver because there package (that was addressed to there PO Box was returned to sender after 7 days and no delivery attempt was made.

Lesson for all. If you order anything on line or over the phone. When you get to the address page(or asked for delivery address over the phone), give your physical address if you don't know the delivery carrier the shipper will use!

All of this is true,. But both UPS and FEDEX, have a version of "Smart Post", where they carry the package to a pre-determined postal facility, sometimes a depot sometime the local P.O.

BUT the P.O. still won't put it in your P.O. Box, they will take it to your house but not your P.O. Box. Go figure.

And as of about two years ago, common carriers, like UPS and FEDEX can put stuff into your house mailbox.

Had Fedex deliver a rather large package to my PO Box just two weeks ago. This after I gave my shipping address as my home to the company I purchased the item from. They ignored it and shipped to the billing address, the PO Box. Lady behind the counter at the post office said it happens all the time. The way it works from what I understand is that Fedex transfers the package to a company that can deliver to the PO.

Previous post nailed it. Smart Post handles the Fedex and UPS.

We live in Mayberry, and don't have USPS mail delivery to our house. Our PO Box occasionally receives deliveries from UPS, and I don't think it's just a happy accident. Our postmistress has never said anything sketchy about it, and I believe there is an agreement in place.

Anymore, when I order anything, I list my address as:
12345 Jones Rd / PO Box 5, or the reverse of the two. That way any carrier will have both addresses, and everything works sweet. Maybe just a perk for living in small town Murica. jd

So I work for ups and yeah sometimes that happens. It actually happened to me a few weeks back where I had a package that was addressed to a po box with a barcode generated by ups so.ewhere along the line. So we have "spa" labels (mini stickers) aside from the main label that get scanned onto the box to know where on the truck it will be located in for delivery that day.

The package I had, had a spa label to the correct house address with a po box for a main label. I asked the person who does address corrections and she told me that it has something to do with sub contracting (she says overseas) and sometimes a "name" gets associated with a known address for that person. It is not very common at all but does happen.

It makes no sense to me as we don't deliver to po boxes- just the post office "sure post" packages as others have said.
What toejoe12 said I believe is in line with what I'm saying.

I have a PO BOX - and I have UPS and FEDEX deliver to my PO BOX all the time. As stated, it's true that UPS and FEDEX don't deliver per se to a PO BOX - but since 2012 (or so) the USPS has a free service called "street addressing". If you sign up for street addressing for your PO BOX - when you know an item is going to be shipped via UPS or Fedex - you give the shipper the street address of the post office where your PO Box resides. The suite # is your POBOX number. Restrictions apply (such as no ammo or haz mat shipments or anything not allowed thru the USPS system)...

You can check to see if this service/option is available for your PO Box.

Yes we deliver PO BOX pieces all the time to post offices as newbieshooter just stated. There is some contract we have with usps. I guess sometimes the "last mile" goes to be delivered by USPS.

the way I understand it is there's two separate and distinct services

1. SurePost - UPS ground service where UPS picks up and (contractually) hands off to USPS to deliver the "last mile"

2. USPS Street Addressing Option - this is a USPS internal service. UPS delivers to what they think is a standard business (the street address of the local USPS branch). USPS personnel take that package and puts it into the appropriate PO Box at that local USPS location.

Ok, just as an fyi for some:
Ups does not deliver to everywhere. In my small town if they dont get enough packages/demand each week they hand it off to the local post office who delivers it, in that case a ups shipped package will get put in a post office box. To muddy the waters more with shipping USPS does not deliver to my physical address so it has to go to my PO box. I have been using a two line address if I dont know who is delivering it, and these days that is most of the time

Edit: for items like ammo that usps will not handle, UPS will just wait until they have enough deliveries in my area to drop it off, usually delaying the delivery by a day or 3

I checked with UPS and as mentioned by some of you, If I address the package to the address of the post office along with my box number, then it will get delivered. Because UPS has a physical address to deliver to.

The reason that UPS does not or can not deliver to a PO box number is because they don't know which post office that PO box is in.

In a sense it is true that UPS does not deliver to a PObox, but will deliver to the physical address of where the PO box is. For example: 4367 W. Jackson St. box #1234 Bobcat CA 32324

And I think most of us know what PO box is and there is no need for a lengthy explanation.

I too live in a small town.
My master bedroom is bigger than our post office.
I do everything through our post office, UPS FEDEX and AMAZON.
It’s amazing what a nice cash Christmas gift will get you.

Living in the mountains, our local post office doesn’t deliver any mail. Everyone is required to get a PO Box and pick up their mail. UPS and FedEx deliver to houses daily by me. However I see the UPS truck stop at the post office also. I’m sure that the houses without easy access, get dropped there. We’ve had them drop packages of ours at the post office, instead of our house. It’s probably because they didn’t have many delivers in our area, and just dropped everything at post office. Our post office then holds the package, and puts a yellow card into the box letting you know that they have a package for you at the counter.

Simple address correction

Even if your driver knows you or not

Most package centers now may have 'pre loads' which means trucks are pre loaded not by the driver

Although my career with 'Brown' we loaded our own trucks which was the first 1 1/2 hr of the day

Ups won’t deliver to post office box but will if the package is shipped by surpost.
UPS started the 'Surepost' method long before I retired

Never understood it......but is still being used.....who makes the money on the box ??

Fed Ex ground does the same thing currently too
