Savage LRPV 6BR

OK,
I bought a Savage LRPV in 6BR last fall and topped it with a Sightron 10X50X56.
I intended and do to use this for our ( what I call ) geezers benchresr group on Monday AMs.
There are no custom BR rifles used by anyone and the guys use everything from .308 to .223.
The rifle is stock as shipped with no truing,bedding or other work done.
This is my first venture into shooting for groups and I am having a BALL!
My latest test was with Berger 105 VLD over 29.7 of Varget seated .015 into the lands from touch.
Average for the three five shot test groups was .343 with the best at .287.
I have 30 loaded for another larger test lot.
Now my question.
If my next test groups average in the mid .300 should I consider being done with component selection
and load development ?
Has anyone had or known first hand of a bone stock Savage that would CONSISTENTLY group
in the 200s in good conditions?
Or have I reached what should be considered this rifles potential.

Thats the thing.
My question is has anyone seen better out of a stock Savage? if so how much better?
I can re-barrel, bed the action,true the action,have the trigger worked on or replaced and
would THINK there would be substantial improvment after the work.
How much is also up to the quality of my reloading and the work that I'm willing to put in to the load development.
I'm just wanting to hear that for a stock Savage I'm pretty much there, or there is .100 left to wring out of it.
Again first hand knowledge is where I place the most value in knowledge.

I have gotten 1/2 MOA all day long with 90,108,105 Bergers and Varget.
IMR 4895 shoots almost as well as Varget for me in this rifle and I will be testing the 105VLD Bergers with that powder.
Bergers seem to be more consistant than the SMK 107 even after I sort them by weight.
A 108 Berger and 28.3 on IMR 4895 BR-4 primers is in the .4 most of the time.
Best groups so far have been .232 at 100 with the 108 load above. That one was with Fed Match primers.
.835 @ 300 yards with SMK 107 and 28.5 IMR 4895. that one shocked me!
200 was less than a inch but I don't recall.
The rifle shoots for sure.
 
I have a couple of Savage LRPV in 6mmbr but mine are the 1 in 12 twist. They shoot far better at 100 yards than the 1 in 8 twist rifles. I have no trouble staying in the very low 2's to mid 1's 5 shot groups. with 25.0 W748 a Federal 205 Match primer and Sierra 69gr SMK's set .005 off the lands. These are the most forgiving rifles I have ever owned. They shoot anything from 40grs to 75grs way under 1/2" but the 69 & 70gr bullets just shoot tiny little one hole groups.
 
I used to shoot 100yd benchrest matches at the Cherry Ridge Range in NJ. In the stock rifle class pretty much the only modification allowed was bedding the action. Also you couldn't use a rifle with a 3" flat fore end (this eliminated the Savage F class and Savage Benchrest rifles). The stock rifle matches were for score not group but some of the scores were amazing for stock rifles. By far the rifles with the most wins were Savage LRPVs chambered in 6mm BR. If I remember correctly many of these guns were using the 1in12 twist barrels with 70 to 80gn flatback bullets. I don't believe Savage even makes the 1 in 12 6mm BR barrel anymore but with the correct bullet the 1 in 8 twist barrel can be almost as good at 100 yds and better at long range. Although thread on tuners were not allowed in this class because it was considered a modification to the rifle, the slip on Limbsaver rubber barrel damper was allowed because it required no modification to the rifle. Most of the competitors were using it to tune their guns with fairly good success. I put one on my LRPV and after playing around with it my groups did shrink.

Because these were score matches it's hard to say exactly what group size these shooters were getting but If I had to guess it was around 1/4 MOA. All of these shooters used wind flags, which also help quite a bit. In any event 0.3 is pretty darn good for any stock rifle.

Having shot a Savage LRPV, If I had to offer advice it would be keep your load where it is. You may be able to pick up some accuracy by playing with the action screw torque. See the Bulletin article:

Or for about $15.00 pick up a Limbsaver barrel damper. Put a little silicone grease on the end of the barrel, slip it on and play around with it. It may help shrink your groups but other than looking a little unconventional it certainly won't hurt.

Thanks for the tips!
I have had my barreled action out of the stock and just gave the screws a
snug fit that felt right to me.
I will be purchasing a torque wrench soon.
I also will be looking up the limbsaver.
The thing is I have only this forum to rely on for information regarding what I can rightfully expect this rifle to do.
It already has exceeded my expectations and shoots at a level I didn't know was possible for a production rifle.
I have to think my reloading is OK giving me the .3 results too.

Whatever You want to know about Savages, just Google Your question, and likely it will take You to Savage Shooters.com, for the answer. The site has been up for a long time, and there’s not much about Savages that hasn’t been covered there. Or You can log in and ask Your question on the Forum. Best of Luck.
 
On the Savage website, they tell you how to tune with screw torque. Proper bedding will never hurt the accuracy. I would try 105 hybrids and 108, 109 grain bullets also. IF you have other primers, try to see what it prefers.

Best group yet was with Berger 108 Target over 28.3 Gr of MR 4895 and a Fed Match primer for a .235
The 108 Bergers may be the bullet for this rifle but more testing of the 105 VLD and the 105
Hybrid will be needed.
Bullet availability is bad but primers and powder is worse as we all know.
My goal is to find a jug of Varget, IMR or H 4895 and get the bullet sorted out using one powder and
then buy a thousand or so of them.
I keep reading about this powder or that powder being a substitute for Varget and they are almost as hard to get as Varget is so they are no solution.
I'm not redady to jump into an 8 Lb jug until I try a few one pounders first.
The three powders mentioned are the only three that I have been able to try.
I have been able to find three LBS of Varget at a local shop at an awful price but bought anyway.
The results are so far Varget seems to shoot most consistantly better groups with whatever bullet I use.
 
I put one together like yours except for the barrel. The recommended torque from HS Precision is 60 inch lbs. Different than my Benchrest 12s. Don't overlook the 107 SMK. They have been easier to find. My 6BR likes H4895 better than Varget and it has been easier for me to find. Clean the barrel often. Good shooting.
 
I recieved my Wheeler wrench today and checked the torque that I had set just by feel.
Front was 65 in lbs
Mid was 60 in lbs and rear was 45-50 in lbs so I was in the ball park.
I was a toolmaker for the first 25 years of my career and must have developed a feel using allen wrenches.
I set the front two as per the Bulletin at 30 in lbs and the rear at 5 in lbs and will
follow the process outlined in the bulletin.
We will see how the rifle reacts to the changes made.
