A cat on hot bricks and little education needed.

I had a customer recently with a shot out Rem 700vs.308.he was like a cat on hot bricks over this rifle.so i fitted him a Pacnor 1-10T barrel.i sent him a video of it in the lathe after chambering with the interapid showing a couple of tenths..if that, run out from throat to the back of the chamber. .i do this all the time these days just to prove everything is correct and everyone is happy.rifle comes back from proof house a few weeks later, customer comes to collect it,still like a cat on hot bricks.i explain barrel break in procedure, bore guide.e.t.c and tell him to scrap his current home loads and start with new lapua brass and refer to a good reloading manual.he told me no need he knows about reloading.mmm,ok.one week later my friend Mike at Calton moor ranges rings me.had a guy here today in the tunnels with a Rem 700 308.new pacnor barrel e.t.c.wrestling with it and like a cat on hot bricks.does no barrel break in when he cleaned it after 30ish rounds he's got solvent running in and out of the action and muzzle like a river.hard bolt closure and tedding bullets everywhere.on inspection of his fired cases, cratered primers, some of them blown.old remington brass split necks.split necks on loaded rounds.his FL die was so full of crud doesn't no how a case sized in it..this guy told me he new about reloading!.he tells Mike he's going have to return the rifle to me it's not right.Mike points out to this guy everything he's doing wrong.including serious safety issues.Mike cleans the rifle properly goes into the shop gets a box of Remington factory ammo, sets the rifle up on the bench and proceeds to fire.after 5 shots he explains to the guy there's no hard bolt closure or extraction and shows him the fired cases, primers and everything is fine.he then points at the 5shot group on the TV screen.a slightly enlarged one hole.the guy stands there scratching is head and isn't like the cat on hot bricks no more.

I once had a customer whose favorite pastime seemed to be to ask me a question then argue about the answer. He was in the legal profession. I pointed out that he had asked the question because he didn't know the answer; but it was in his nature. One day, I told him that his problem was, he had spent too much time getting educated and, as near as I could tell, he had burned his brain out so he had nothing left to work with. He took this in stride as people in his profession are used to criticism. Another, a medical doctor, had the same tendency and, I opined, for the same reason. On the other hand, when I was younger and just starting out as a gunsmith, I built some pretty good rifles and won a pile of trophies with them and was convinced I knew it all. I did not, do not, and the evidence suggests, I never will! WH

Made prefits for a number of years........have seen this more than once. I didn't even argue with them, just refund and resale at a slightly used discount....stopped making a new replacement barrel and just went straight to refund......next shooter would shoot bugholes with it. Very seldom was it a true lemon of a barrel.

As a smith, all one can control is the work that we've done- and it's up to the customer to make sure the stuff that he's responsible for is done correctly. Everything from bedding/stock fitment to cleaning regimen to the ammo used.

.rifle comes back from proof house a few weeks later,
Curious...do you need to do this on new barrels only, or any type of chamber modifications/re-chambering?

Guess I have never observed a cat on hot bricks… can some one explain what behavior this is?

It is law here in the UK.if a new barrel is fitted to a existing rifle or a new rifle is built it has to go to one of the two proof houses.London or Birmingham to be test fired with higher pressure loads than standard.they put there 'go' and 'no go' gauges in before they do anything.im always really uptight with the proof houses and there high pressure loads..incase they blow a primer and gas cut the bolt face.how do I explain that to a customer who has just paid alot of money for a custom action.once proofed it is stamped with there mark and we are good to go.if any registered firearms dealer-RFD doesn't do that they are on thin ice.custodial sentence-revoked certificate guaranteed.the laws here are so strict it's untrue.my register as got to be available to the police 24/7.365 days a year that's how it is.everything has to be registered and accounted for, including sound moderators they are classed as a firearm.i like to show the customer the finished chamber so they can see everything is right.i always stand by my work 100% and like you said the rest is up to them.

Some Gunshops I do work for send rifles to the proofhouse even if the existing barrel has been threaded or shortened and threaded for a sound moderator.there insurance policy insists they do it,even new sound moderators straight from the manufacturer.the proofhouses aren't government owned.they drafted in this policy about muzzle threading 20years ago.some do it some don't,its a grey area.new barrels-chamberings have to go.Peter Jackson of Jackson Rifles in Scotland.A trade supplier,a chartered engineer and a true gentleman, appointed a London Barrister to look into the proofhouse theory on muzzle threading.his conclusion was the proofhouses were no correct on there claims.Peter sent his barristers report to the proofhouses, they were threatening to sue Peter.Peter said ok let's go to court and said to them I have got 6mm sound moderators with 30 cal proof marks on them! mmm..how do you get a 30 cal down a 6mm hole, they stamped them saying they have.Peter didn't hear anything from the proofhouses again..I wonder why.
