Anschutz 1413 Barrel Cleaning

I have a 1976 Anschutz 1413 Super-Match that I have owned for probably 25 years, maybe longer. Early on I shot it in our winter league (50' indoors). But really haven't shot it much in the last 10-15 years. Recently our club has introduced an "F-class" match, but it is shot off a bench and I have been participating and doing OK. My rile shoots good, but not great. I took it to the Lapua Test Center in OH over the winter and had it lot tested - I bought a case of the ammo that tested best. But I am still getting unexplained flyers.

So I decided to do a "serious" cleaning of the barrel. My procedure has been to use a mixture of 50/50 Hoppes No. 9 and Kroil (recommended by a friend), saturate the bore, let it sit for 15 minute, then do 20 strokes with bronze brush. Then run 2-3 dry patches. I have used this regimen for 20-25 cycles and I am still getting BLACK, BLACK, BLACK, patches after brushing.

I did recently discover a serious chunk of pitting, I assume from rust in the bore. In reality I think it is probably less than a 1/4" linearly. either on top of a land or in a grove, I find it very difficult to differentiate between the two.

I would appreciate any advice!

Put a new firing spring in it and see if it helps. As to rust or pitting I have no suggestions except having someone knowledgeable look at it with a borescope.

Wayne was the pitting around the last 8-10" of the barrel? and did look like it was in a circular pattern and looked like black dots? I have seen this in 2 1411 barrels they still shot ok and could hold 1/4" or better groups but with a freshly cleaned barrel accuracy would fade after less than 30-40 rounds until I cleaned it again.
if you are still getting black patches after scrubbing you may just need to keep scrubbing. did you try the CF .22 brushes?

I replaced the firing pin spring last winter with a new Wolf.

The rust pitting is about inches from three chamber. You can see the erosion, but it may only be 1/8". I am using Tipton .223 bronze brushes. I have tried all the solvents I own (50/50 Hoppes & Kroil, Eliminator, Butch's, Seafoam Deep Creep). 5 times with Iosso on VFG pellets (20 strokes).

I don't see that I am doing any damage when bore scoping, so I will just continue (I think I must be back to about 1980 carbon), until it's clean.

I remember some of them took several cleaning sessions to get it where the patch (VFG) came out fairly clean after the 3rd VFG pellet. friend cleaned his 52D and it took him several hours till the patches started to come out clean. maybe try straight Kroil on the brush scrub and let it sit for 30-60 minutes and then patch.

Get some IOSSO or JB bore paste. Put large patch on a .20 cal brush or jag. Back and forth in the first 2-3” of the barrel. Then use the .22 cal brush after.

Find a local with a bore scope and see if there are chunks or streaks of lead/fouling still present. Patches will be crazy black for a long time.

It sounds like you need an abrasive of some sort, that is where the IOSSO or JB can help with.

is the pitting at the 6'o-lock position?

The black is the bronze brush wearing down withe the strokes. When you are going to flush the barrel use a nylon brush and then you can get clean patches.

My barrel takes about 20 strokes and then it is clean. Verified by my teslong

Thats interesting, as I don't seem to have that problem and I run a brush as much as 2 dozen times back and forth and normally within 3VFG wet pellets they come out the same color as it went in.

This morning I did the Iosso thing again, then pushed several patches through the bore to makes sure all of the paste was removed. After that I made 20 strokes with a bronze (CF brush), then a clean dry patch.

Apparently I don't understand what I should be looking for with the borescope, because as far as i can see the bore is spotless.

Here is what I get from my 1411 the nylon brush in the picture I believe was used to see if it would work since the barrel has over 40K rds. I went back to the bronze brush you see in the picture (I won't use nylon brushes anymore). even though the barrel is SS you should be seeing the same sequential process of the VFG pellets as I do when I clean. from the first to the last dry pellets using a bronze brush.
as I noted earlier about the comment about the bronze brush being a source of the black, I get 1 pellet that is dark but that is about it. about SS just rubbing it with a clean cloth can leave a black residue but, in your case, you are dealing with CM
