Rem 222 load ? IMR or H-4198

troupe

Was wondering from some 222 shooters, I may have located some H-322, but also have found some IMR-4198. I heard the H-4198 is better. Any input from the more experienced would be appreciated. Of coarse I would prefer the most accurate and all rifles are different, so that part I do understand.

Thanks in advance,

Tom

I once owned a vintage Remington 700 varmint special in .222 Rem with no mods. other than i adjusted the trigger to a lighter pull, it would put 5 sierra 52 gr. matchkings into 3/8" and smaller at 100 yds. with 24.0 H-335 Remington 7.5 primers with neck sized brass.

In my opinion it is harder to find a powder in the correct burning rate that doesn't work. I've gotten good loads with Benchmark, 2230, 748, 3031, 4320, h-335, Old Herter's powders, and others over the past 50 yrs. Surprisingly I've never used 4198 as it wasn't versatile enough to keep a stock of it.

The H-4198 seems to meter somewhat better, somewhere around 19 to 20 grains of either will make you smile with the 52-grain bullets.

I’ve shot both 4198s and IMR 4895. Nothing came close to N133 with 52 g bullets. Get some Barts bullets.

5 shot groups @ 100 yds

Did you find the need to adjust tune frequently using N133 in 222 or is it more forgiving than in 6PPC?

David

Don’t know 6 ppc. My experience with 222 has been they stay consistent with several powders especially N133.
So many good loads for the 222 with a 52 g bullet that it’s easy to shoot sub MOA and way smaller depending on how the rifle is set up.

Way back when 4198 was called "4198" because
the primary choice had IMR on the label.

This 4198 was very good in the 222 through 222 Mag
but was relatively long-grained and not a perfect choice
for throwing charges. I knew a few shooters who abandoned
4198 for powders that were easier to throw.

Somewhere along the way Hodgdon introduced a shorter-grained
version of H4350 and H4831----with SC (Short Cut) added
to the label.

The grain length of the H4198 was also shortened but the SC
designation was not added.

I prefer the H4198 but my rifles don't seem to have a preference.

Either of the 4198 are good. But IMR is harder to throw.

I went to N133 and 52 grain Berger.

easy to throw, fast and consistent for me. But I do not compete.

Tom, the folks at Hodgdon say that there is no more accurate powder for the 222 than H322. I have followed their recommendation, and also have used N133, H4198, IMR4198, and H4895. I think one would have to be really scientific to tell the difference, which I have not. H4198, and IMR4198 provide higher velocities with 45 and especially 40 grain bullets, which is a draw for varmints. Generally 222’s are lasers, especially true for woodchucks in the 100 yard range, closer and further. Put the crosshairs in the spot you want to hit, squeeze, and it is DRT. As another interesting observation, Remington used 4895 in their accuracy load for the 222. It was probably IMR4895 though. You will do extremely well with your H322, and IMR4198. The IMR being more difficult to meter as others have said.

Best of luck, Peter

One of the fine things about a 222 is that they shoot with a variety of powders. I’ve owned quite a few and still have more than half a dozen of them. It’s nice when there are shortages like your seeing today to be able to use a variety of powders and still get great results. I use H322, H335, N133, 8208, iMR 4198 and H4198, they all do a good job. Each rifle tends to have its favorite, one powder doesn't perform the best for all the rifles. As far as IMR 4198 vs H4198 I don’t think there’s a wrong choice, shoot them both and see what your particular rifle likes, I bet the differences between the too are pretty minor.

I am getting consistent sub .3" 3 shot groups at 100 yards with IMR 4198 and 40gr nosler BT and I haven't optimized it yet. I have never been able to dial in a rifle faster than this 222 with IMR 4198. I tried H322 for kicks and did not get good results.
