In October I bought a few thousand CCI #34 Large Rifle Military Primers. I had read all about them having a hard cup to reduce slam fires. I tried them in my 243 bolt and my 308 bolt and saw no difference vs standard CCI or Win LR primers. These are not bench guns just factory bolt guns we use for white tail. i have only shot 2-250 rds. with no issues.
Have any of you had any issues running #34's in bold guns?

Nope. I have a 1000 of them and in my loads I see no difference in velocity between them and standard CCI 200s. With the small rifle (41s), I do have an issue with one Remington 700 that I have. About 1 in 3 fails to ignite. I blame the firing pin spring in the bolt, not the primers. When used in one of my ARs (5.56, 6.8, 6X45, or BO) I have no issues.

A typical firing pin is not defined, but for discussion here lets say that a typical firing pin should have no problems with 34 or 41 primers.

The 34 and 41 have specs that require a test where a special test rig with a falling weight mechanism will not be set off below a certain drop height. The idea is to prevent slam fires in military weapon systems of all kinds.

Unless your rig is weak or specialized, it shouldn’t have any issues with these primers since the ignition levels on them are not really what would be considered high, they are just specified to be safe.

I use the CCI #34’s in my M1 Garand, mainly to help prevent slam fires. If I recall the only difference between them and standard CCI LR primers is the thicker cup.

Loading a single rounds in an M1 are best pulled out of a clip above an empty case. Some let the bolt close half way before letting it slam on a chambered single round. Letting the bolt fly home on a chambered round is a game of roulette. Hence the #34’s to help the alleviate the problem, but all rounds in an M1 should chamber freely, if a case isn’t sized correctly with this in mind a slam fire is possible even out of the clip. Pulling rounds out of the clip decelerates the energy of the bolt flying forward, as designed, to prevent slam fires. Fool with this design functionality can case a problem.

I saw a competitor single loading an AR for standing slow fire. Dropped the round in the chamber, tripped the bolt release and BANG. The AD went into the ground in front of him. I think they were loaded with a Federal primer. He switched over to Remington 7 1/2’s after that incident.

I also had slam fires in my R25 (DPMS) shooting slow fire AR Midrange Tactical match using Federals. Had to make sure I was on the target before dropping the bolt. Only use #34's in that gun now with no worries if it is going to fire when releasing the bolt.

The "military" CCI primers both small and large are thicker cup but are supposed to be the same mix as their magnum primer. Most military ammo is loaded with ball powder and with the temperature conditions from extremes of hot to cold mag primers are used to light the powder no matter the conditions.

I've been shooting M1's for years but never used CCI 34's. So much conflicting info, I have yet to find an authoritative source to duplicate M2 Ball reloads using CCI 34's. Best solution is to work up and chronograph new loads.

I realize this thread is a year old but 34’s do not have thicker cups!….. there anvils are different to reduce slam fires in automatic rifles. The cup and primer mix is the same as magnum primers
