What do y’all think of my red neck gun

Thought I’d show this red neck master piece off. It’s a carcano I bought off a buddy he rebarreled to 7.62x39, with an new SKS barrel.

He chopped the old one off at the trunion and rethreaded the sks barrel on set the headspace then tac welded the barrel on a few times to make sure it didn’t move any. I know barrel welding is taboo, but it’s just small tac welds not a big line. Plus it was already threaded on and welded to the rest of the original barrel not the heat treated receiver or anything like that.

Then he added the fixed magazine modification and I added the bubba sights. I got the rifle to group 1in a 25 yards. Perfect zombie gun!

If any of y’all want to chime in on the barrel welds I’d like to hear your concerns as I’m not a gun smith or metal expert.

Carcano's have a bad reputation earned from inconsistent bore sizes and ammo makers not making any attempt to educate shooters to find the true bore size and deal with it. These guns converted properly to 7.62-39 are a good fix and a good use of junk to make a good gun. But I don' think this was one of those.

You don’t reckon this is a good gun! :) I mean bullets come out the end and don’t key hole like the original worn and chopped barrel would have.

I think you use it just like it is and take advantage of the match quality sights and look for a barrel that can be properly threaded and installed at a later date. All guns are a work in progress, if you bought a brand-new gun it would come without a scope or a mount. you would have to find ,buy, install and sight the rifle. This is the same, it can evolve into what ever you want.

I would actually like to get a barrel that will thread on like normal. However not many folks make a carcano barrel, threads would have to cut custom.

When looking for a barrel get a 308 bore and load cheap and plentiful 308 bullets in your chicom cases. I will be a hand loaders dream. That is member here Gmac's idea and a good one. Ruger does it with their 7.62-39 ranch rifle.

Measure the receiver ring for diameter and look at the weaver chart and look for some scope rings that will drill and tap. I am getting so excited see if he has another one.

Not sure if a scope would like a split bridge receiver. I was thinking about drilling and taping to add a rail for a red dot though!

That may be a better way to go. i am thinking somewhere i have seen a Carcano that had conventional scope rings and a 1.5 -4 rifle scope on it. The master has signed in.
