IMR7383

Anyone have experiences that you can share regarding this military powder? It’s an extruded powder that supposedly is low in ‘flash’ as part of the military spec. It’s being promoted as similar to IMR4831 in burn rate but not based on same weights, based on volume. Apparently it’s bulky and they recommend starting at 15 % under IMR4831 loads.

Seen some literature saying it’s dirty until you get some pressure and that it’s “pesky” pressure wise if you turn too go too far with it. Doesn’t give high pressure signs as most of us experienced reloaders are familiar to until it gets over-pressure. Saying it performs best at 85% to slightly over 100% loading density. Saying it’s good in 22-250 up through most 30 caliber rounds with heavy for caliber bullets.

Any way, would sure like to hear from others who ve used it and any experiences.
Thx in advance.

IMR 7828 maybe? Or is it one of those surplus powders?

I’ve never used it but from what I read it is a high energy triple based propellant military surplus powder canister grade. It it VERY unpredictable and the difference between lot numbers is big. I would use extreme caution with this powder. And if I remember correctly it was used for 50 browning tracer rounds.

Creedmoor2, that’s the same info my research has shown. Hope some guys weigh in with experiences. I ll have to post mine.

BTW, it is new manufacture, military powder. Not like 7828. Thx

I've used it in 25-06 with 117gr bullets. It did OK, but accuracy was not as good as Ramshot Magnum. Recoil felt less, than with Magnum also. I've also used it in 270 WSM that I loaded for a friend. He was happy with it but never chrono-ed it. I loaded up some 6.5-06 with it, but haven't shot them yet. It lends itself to heavy for cal bullet weights.
I have not had the dirty burn issue, but everything else you learned while researching it is correct. I use it for plinking loads where I don't need max velocity. You might be able to get max vel, but I don't have a way to KNOW my pressures. The quick peak pressure thing scares me a bit.
I won't go over 85% of an IMR 4831, minus 1 gr load.
EXAMPLE: Lyman 48th says IMR 4831 for a 150gr bullet in a 270 WIn. Ranges 50.3gr to 54.3grs. = I load to 45gr.
54gr x .85 = approx 46gr. I load 45gr. I might push it to 45.5gr.
In the '06 family of cases that I have done, it is about 90-95% case volume, based on my calibrated eyeball.

Cowboybart, great info! Thx for sharing. We ll definitely be using caution and the LabRadar when starting load development.

We shoot a lot of 22 GT with 88 gr Eldm s and hoping it’ll perform there as well as 6CM with 108 s. Time will tell!
