22-250 BBl replacement last minute ( Savage Mod 12)

My buddy bought a used Savage Mod 12 used. I've been on his as$ for months about going and seeing how it shoots. Previous owner said only 300 rds thru it.
Anyway back to title ( subject) He wants a replacement barrel. 26" 1:12 TW
NSS has a Criterion brand varmint contour in stock.
Should I just order that or check with Shilen?

Your friend shouldn't be so anxious to get rid of that barrel. I have one just like that and it shoots nicely. Enough to where it's worth using to where it's worn out before putting something else on there. This is a factory Savage sporter gun show special, nothing done to it. Shot it at 75yds just to see what it would do. Obviously it liked velocity, or maybe it just needed a few rounds down the tube. Came back a couple days later and shot that last group at 100yds to check zero, the exact same group only a tad bigger. Note the load and velocity. Nothing glamorous about it but worth keeping.

Criterion Barrels, are made by, Krieger ( Button Rifled & very, Accurate, SAME as,.. most, Shilen's ).
I have, a Criterion, in 6 XC and it produces ONE Hole group's, in the 2's and 3's and it could probably, do better, IF,..
I could shoot, better.
FYI,. the 24 inch, "Sporter" Barrel ( .710 Dia muzzle ) on, a Rem 700 Action, 6.5 x 20 Burris, H-S Precision Stock, Glass Bedded, weigh's,.. 9.5 Pounds ! ( Might want to think about,.. "carry Wt. " ? ).
I Personally, wouldn't want, ANY Heavier,.. IF carrying / Hiking after, Varmints in the Field, much !
I'm NOT Fond of, carrying heavy, Truck Axle's around, in the Field, much.
Good luck with your,.. Choice !

Looks like Criterion is now independent from Krieger, new owners.

YUP,.. But probably, STILL HAS,. "high Standards" of,.. Quality !
I'd ask Jim at, NSS if any,.. different,. Maybe, Krieger,.. "Set up" the Tooling ???
You'd be hearing, some COMPLAINTS by now,.. IF,.. "Bad" !
I've had Shilen's before and they are, good, too !

Best "All around" Twist for, the .22-250 is, a 9 Twist ( IMO ) to shoot up to, the 65- 69 - 75 gr. class, Bullets !
And Explore, the "Benefits" of going,.. .22-250 Ackley Imp. !

My 8 twists shoot every thing from a 52 to a 90 in 22-250. Particularly loves the 60-80 grain bullets. 55 grain spin faster and blow up more.

No real benefit to a 12 twist unless you want to shoot 40s only. In my opinion.

Just to throw my hat into the ring.

Let's see here: Where do I start?
Why 1;12 twist? Because I have 4K 50 gr Vmax's in my inventory.
Why a heavy bbl: Shooting praire dogs. Not a carry gun. Wish the bbl was 2" in diameter.
Ackley? Can totally see that, BUT, TIME is a consideration. ( You know the title at the very top?)
Gonna call Shilen in the morning and see what they have in inventory..

I would do some load development first to see what the rifle can do. I have a Savage FV12 (Cabelas) and it shoots less than 1/2" groups at 100 yds on a regular basis with 50g vmax. I've shot a few 52g hp's in it as well and it shows some promise as well.

A wise choice. Fasr twist is very fashionable with some but you can spend a lot of time fooling around trying to find the happy combination with light bullets. My .22’s - 221, 223, 223ai, 22-250, 22-250ai, ( a couple of each and other used up barrels). Are all 14 or 12 twist and all were stupid easy to make shoot very well. They like just about any 40-55 bulllet you feed them. Even the std. 223 / 14tw Shilen shot those too- long-for-14 twist 55 BlitzKings really well. Regardless of what others say, I wouldn’t be messing with a fast twist 22 in a varmint gun.

I too have a mdl 12 22-250, mine is a FVSS, 26" stainless barrel and receiver. It shoots 55 gr Game Kings very well. I've killed groundhogs out to 470 yards with it. I'd shoot some more before changing the barrel.

Last year I screwed together two LH Savages, a 1-12" 22-250 and a 1-9" 260 Remington. Both have Shilen 24" Stainless Select Match barrels, and I couldn't be happier, both rifles shoot great.

Looks like Criterion is now independent from Krieger, new owners.

And has been for years. I have had two of them on a Savage “target”, a 243 Win, which got tired and now a 6 Dasher. Both shot extremely well and cleaned super easy.
