Help with AR accuracy in 223

Everyone is working on loads. I would take the hand guard off and pull the barrel off. Then put locktite on barrel extension and tighten it down.

I would try some 62 gr. With a 1 - 9 twist I think they will shoot good. I like H335 or CFE223. I have quite a few after market barrels, and yours should shoot better than that.

Varget is all I use in my AR. I shot 52’s at 200 yards, 69’s or 77’s at 300 yards and 80’s at 600 yards. It worked great for all of them. However, my barrel is a Krieger 1/7.75 twist. The sierra 52 gr bullets are fat. The bearing surface is not that much less than a 69. I don’t know about the 53’s.

I would expect that load to shoot well in my rifle. Another thing to check is make sure the gas tube has some clearance at the barrel nut and the gas key slips over the end of the tube without any dragging or interference.

I agree that you should try the 52s. A 1 in 9 twist would normally work better with lighter bullets. I wore out a Douglas 1 in 8 twist with Varget. It shot very well over a large range of powders and bullets. I hesitated to go with a 1 in 7.75 Krieger , but it was highly recommended by one of the best AR match rifle builders in the country. I will say the Kreiger will group a little better than the Douglas, but it is a little more finicky with the loads. As an aside, if you want to know how many rounds you can get out of the barrel I can‘t tell you for sure, but I do know after burning an 8 pound can of Varget, you start shooting donuts. It’s pretty much done as a target rifle after that.

He ran out of cash to reload after using Lapua brass in his AR.
Maybe. Or maybe he just wanted more from the AR than most think it has in it.

I set up one of my uppers for turned Lapua, and trust me when I say that shooting Long Range with it, you want all the brass strength and quality you can get.

Lapua is that.
