Building a BR stock. thoughts?

I am going to attempt to build a short range bench rest stock this coming winter. It will be loosely based on the McMillan Edge stock. I was wondering if anyone had comments on keeping the rear and forearm on the same plane (It looks like the edge does not) and thoughts on the depth of the rear of the stock. I see BR stocks from narrow depth like the Edge to heavy like the LR stocks. Thanks for your thoughts.

This straight out of the NBRSA Rule Book

If your only shooting club matches build it however you like. I would lean towards the same plane.

That is a valid point. But if he has no interest in sanctioned matches which the large majority of shooters do not he might have a better way to go, and I believe he does. I think many shooters who are involved in sanctioning bodies, and I have been, feel they represent the spear. I am not sure they are much more than the point on the tip of the spear as far as numbers go. Do they represent a lot of knowledge and ability, yes they do but the amount of sanctioned shoots in relation to all the local club shoots is pretty small.

Jeff, you may check the schedule Lots of registered matches..

I check many schedules. I think very few who don't normally shoot local matches are unaware of how many there are. Lots. I enjoy sanctioned matches for the consistacy. I enjoy local matches because they exist year around in my area and there are so many I can shoot multiple matches any weekend staying in my local area. For several years I was shooting 2 matches every Sat and 2 every Sunday and missing many more than I could make. More matches than hours in the weekend. My point is I think many involved in santioning bodies fell they are "it" , so to speak. But they are actually a minority and I am speaking about numbers of participants. Lots of talented shooters in both groups which probably surprise some.

I'll offer a couple things. Assuming this will be made from wood, I think most make a square center main member, about 2"x2", long enough for the entire length. You can do most all of the inletting needed in this center. Action, barrel channel, bolt cut, trigger guard and trigger hole, and drop behind the action. Then you can laminate the front for the width you want, and add the keel section on the back for the rake. Then shape and finish. If weight isn't an issue, there is no need to taper the forend, nothing in the rules about that, only the rear taper.

In the sketch A J posted, most stocks exceed the drop of 4" as shown, at least the ones I have checked. That 4" drop is really not much.

That's a piece of myrtlewood. That one in particular is ribbon fiddle-back...it is quite heavy for its size. Here are a few more photos

Some of the rays running through it are beautiful. Is it naturally yellow or is it sealed?
That's the natural color...here is another ribbon fiddle-back myrtle. These are $400 each plus shipping if you're interested.
