IMI Range Brass?

Looking for opinions on weather or not to reload this piece of IMI brass. As you can see from the 1st pix, the case has a significant dent from banging off a shell deflector after it was ejected from an AR15.

After FL sized this case, the 2nd pix shows what it looked like post sizing.

This piece of brass will be loaded up with a 53gr. Hornady V-Max bullet over 23.9grs. of H335 (been using this load for years with great results on P. Dogs). Here's my question, is this case safe to use as a reload? (Brass has only been fired once and was originally factory ammo). I confirmed it was only fired once after popping the spent primer and swagging the primer pocket.

I would pitch it. Tommy Mc

That's what I was thinking of doing... I do have PLENTY of .223/5.56 brass for reloading so no worries there. I planned on using it when I set up my annealer. Thx.

Honestly I can’t believe you even had to ask. It’s no wonder why when I started reloading I was told by some experienced reloader’s
NEVER USE ANYONE’S RELOADS!…
Seeing this post validates there advice all those many years ago.

If you do end up using any recovered IMI brass, be aware that unless it has changed in recent years, it's the heaviest / lowest internal capacity 223 case on the commercial market, and this impacts on pressures and safe maximum loads. For several editions, Speer used this make in its handloading load development and its manual's 223 load tables on the basis that as the lowest capacity brass then available in the US, switching makes was therefore unlikely to produce dangerous results. This was of course at the expense of maximium charge levels and MVs in Speer's loads.

So, switching maximum loads worked up in say Winchester or some years LC former 5.56 brass to IMI without dropping charges and reworking them can produce excessive pressures.

I have a friend that gave me nearly 2 - 5 gallon buckets of range brass, so the few pieces of IMI brass I picked up at the range last week will only be used when I set up my annealer.

I would separate your brass and reduce your load for the IMI. Does all of your brass look like that? Over pressure loads can’t be good for your gun.

Take the hooked piece of Velcro and stick it to the shell deflector. That will stop denting of the cartridge.

Range brass. FWIW, the one AR upper that I own that has a shell deflector has velcro installed on it about 5 years ago. My 3 other AR15 uppers are 'slab sides' with no forward assist or shell deflector.

Why try to save 1 piece of brass? I would toss it even if it was safe. I don't think a dent like that would FF out.
