Pistol Primers

Can small rifle primers be substituted for small pistol primers in .45acp cases? I shoot only softball target loads of 3.8gr Clays and 185 cast bullets.

I've used small rifle primers in .38/.357 and 9mm revolvers and pistols with no problems. I don't see why they wouldn't work in your case.

Been doing it for years in 9mm. Forced in to it with the shortages but absolutely no issues. Many tests have been done

They would not always go bang the first time, I tried rifle primers in my 9 mm Glock 26...bang, click, click, click, bang,...really a frustrating day at the range, and I never loaded any rifle primers in 9 mm again....depends on your firearm, hammer fired probably no problem, striker fired maybe, maybe not. If they work, great, if it's hit and miss with light primer strikes, no fun. Load a few and try em with each rifle primer you choose, as some rifle primers have even thicker metal cups .025, mag, BR, and mil spec. While regular non mag primers have .022 thick cups easier to ignite with a lighter pistol firing system.

Hmmm.... I did not know about small primer pockets in 45 acp brass. I've never seen any 45 acp brass with small primer pockets. But, I haven't purchased any 45 brass or ammo since the 1980s. I'm still shooting the 2000 pieces I originally bought back then.

Found out about small primers in 45acp the hard way, by ruining a decapping pin trying to punch out a primer. Learned to sort range brass pick ups after that! Lol.

jk80….I found out when I crushed a LPP trying to hand seat it. Started off a little tight. Lucky it didn’t go bang.

From what I’ve read, seems Blazer and Federal used them more than others and was supposed to be less toxic and “greener.” Like lead and gunpowder is so safe for the environment . Some headstamps have an N or NT for non-toxic.

SPP punches out the same as LPP, hence the universal decapping dies that are around. I can't see how primer size would destroy a decapping pin?

I used to sort 45 brass by primer size, and trash the small primer brass. I hate that stuff. I now use a batch of Starline exclusively. A bit more trouble shagging the empties, but I don't run into weird non-conforming brass problems anymore.

Depends upon the striker/hammer in your gun and the exact make and type of rifle primer. Regular small rifle primers (domestic) work in my P90, but not small rifle magnum or CCI-41s. I haven't tried my latest acquisition: The Turkish SPP.

It is a "test in small batches" deal as far as I am concerned when you start substituting primers. Load low to start.
