257 roberts imp brass problem???

I’m looking for some insight on a recent purchase I made. I purchased a Shilen dga in 257 improved. I’m having issues with stiff bolt closures on fireformed brass . Some shells go in easily others bolt barely close. No amount of resizing (shoulder bump) matters??? + p nosler and federal brass. Annealed before firing. Case head is scuffed badly? Any help appreciated. Thanks

Apparently you haven't quite checked everything then. Could mixed brass (Nos/Fed) have anything to do with it? Scuffed case head sounds like a bit too long on headspace? It's kinda hard to tell from here with the minimal info given.

Your dies probably aren’t sizing the back of the cases down enough near the case head. We call this area the .200” line because that’s the area on a reamer print. It could be other things but more often than not that’s the problem. Put a bunch of Sharpie lines all over a case that doesn’t fit well and run it in and out. It might take a few times.

After turning my die in 3/4 turn past touching shell holder it resized the shoulder and shells go in gun better. But gonna break my press so much force was needed?? Not sure what to do ?? Barrels not loose chambering stamp appears to be in right locations ??? Maybe the rcbs die is messed up???

Get new brass load fireform in your rifle get you a set L E WILSON ardor dies you may have get 6mm or 244 Ackley neck die use correct bush fore 257 caliber.

How much shoulder bump does that give you? Do new cases go in smoothly? Maybe its not fully sizing the case near the base

If you could find some older Winchester in 257 Roberts and fire form, you will be in good shape.

I make my brass out of PPU 7mm mauser and never had the problem you are having.

You have an improved chambering in a gun made probably 40+ years ago. How are you reloading if you don't even have dies? If thats the rifle that was on Gunbroker a month or so ago that was indeed a 257 Imp (28 degree shoulder).

Are you using new brass? Because new brass usually takes quite a few firings in an improved chamber before it ever starts giving you any resistance without any sizing at all.

If you do find the right dies, there is still the chance they wont do the job of resizing for YOUR chamber.

If it's a matter of setting the shoulder back enough, take some metal off the top of the shellholder so the brass can go in farther.

Thanks but a member here had a great idea and worked. I ground a shell holder down a little and was able to put my die down enough then to bump the shoulder. Brass goes in nicely now . Thanks for all the input!! And it is a 40 degree shoulder so I have the right dies
