Go Gauge Loose

New Pacific Tool / Go Gauge in 6 BR / inserted it in new Shelin barrel ( not threaded into action) just to see if it would "go" the Go Gauge seems like it is undersized on the diameter as I can "wiggle" it. Is this normal? Or is the Go Gauge just for "length" ( head space).?

Maybe the chamber is too big.

Sorry mark, I was kidding when I posted this. I have gauges for every cartridge I shoot even my Competition Match barrels. All of them have a touch of wiggle. I do check before I install. My first set of 6br gauges I had to send back they were mismarked and not 6br. They were replaced with the correct gauges.
Always check.

Go/No-Go gauges are not intended to check diameter at all. I use cellophane tape around the gauge to make them a better fit. You don't want it too tight as it may affect your ability to accurately measure protrusion while cutting a chamber. It needs to bottom freely but side wiggle can cause it to cock in the chamber and cause a mistake. Some have a groove in them. It'd be a perfect place for an o-ring...if I could find one that made it a good fit. Lol!

Agree with the others, Go-No-Go chamber gages are not intended to check chamber diameters, just the datum length.

I’d bet castration rings would work. I use them for my bump keys (lock picking hobbies)

Thanks guys! This new Shilen, Savage large shank in 6 BR (Savage PTA) will be my first bbl replacement. Watched a ton of YouTube videos so now I’m an expert. (Hahaha) going to take barrel off sometime soon thanks again!

Yup, factory... I don't have a bbl vise, was thinking of cobbling something up with wood, leather and "C" clamps. Neighbor has a milling machine so should be able to come up with something...

Well I did get the barrel off. DON’T laugh! I put some penatrating oil in scope base mounting hole. Warmed the action with a torch. Now, hold on again. I kept the flame far below the action and only warmed it. It’s been way hotter after slinging dogs all the prairie. Cleaned up the old barrel threads and chased the action threads about ten times. Going to clean the action real well and put new Shelin on. 32CD49F8-AA8D-4369-ABA6-56F886212B6D.jpeg

Grew up poor on a dairy farm. I thought I was the king of making do with what I had to fix something. If that works, you have me beat. I doubt you will be able to remove a factory Remington barrel though.;)

I'm guessing based on the background of your shop, that you have a heavy shop vise in there somewhere?

Using some sturdy wood and cutting either a radius or even just a "V" into two pieces to conform to the barrel and then clamping with your shop vise, will work nearly as good as a purpose built barrel vise.

Even if you don't have a shop vise, you could use those wooden saddles with a piece of steel backing and use your C-clamps with less worry. You got it done without damage and that is a great start.

I am trying to remove the "ejector" from my bolt. ( Savage PTA) I made a 1/16" pin from a 15 ga finish nail.. Two questions: what side do I need to push from and do I need to push the "ejector" in while pushing the pin? I hope I explained that correctly.
EDIT: Or maybe how do I remove the "ejector?"
