Where did Q.C. go in .22LR?

Three failures to fire yesterday. All Winchesters and all well struck on the rim. Not the gun unless all my .22 rifles and pistols need work. Thanks, James

Out the window. Seriously, that was 3 out of how many rounds fired. I'm not blowing your concern or question off, because I believe every one of them should fire. It been a while since I've had a FTR in any .22lr ammo.

The cheap winchester wildcats always have a few duds it seems. Most of the time the second time they will go bang, but every so often be one real dud. Federal, cci, and remington cheap stuff always seemed decent.

Search for, OVER sized, Firing Pins, and replace, the Hammer Spring, they work great, in my Custom Ruger 10-22 with my New, Green Mtn Barrel.
I haven't been Mauled by a single Sage Rat since replacing those Two Items !
Rarely if, ever,. a FTF !
And, cheap Winchester, HV, HP's are my best "Killer's" on, the Rats ( they have, a Nice sized, Hollow Point ).

In bulk / discount house 22LR ammo I have come to expect a certain # of mis-fires.

If I'm really bored or cheap I have turned the round so the firing pin will strike 90 degrees from initial impact. In the vast majority of the time the round will fire with the re-strike.

Maddening but appears to be the norm for quite some time.

I went through several cases of CCI SV ammo when I was shooting bullseye pistol, one case would have ~2-3 duds per hundred while the next case would have less than 1 dud per hundred.

The duds were fun, best way to demonstrate a terrific flinch….

You just may be able to "Rim Thickness Sort" a way out of this problem. I use a nice 6mm .243 fired case with my dial calipers. Check/measure the "duds" first [if you saved them] & then sort out a couple of dozen to test. My theory, The thinner rimmed ones are tougher to ignite. Might be the other way, who knows ? mike

Refuse to buy WW RF during a shortage. They're of questionable quality during the good times but just like a lathered mule, in my experience, their QC sucks air & breaks wind when the going gets a bit tough.

Did Winchester ever have QC? is the question. The last time i bought Win. 22 LR's was the summer of 1979 and would get 6-10 FTF out of a box of 50. I was a teenager earning money mowing lawns and cleaning up construction sites. I sent Winchester a letter, and they sent me a coupon for some free ammo of my choice.

Big brand name super bargain bulk rimfire ammo has declined in quality for over last 5-10 years. There are endless postings on forums of people swearing they are done with it but yet it still sells. I found that waiting for a good sale on mid tier level ammo was worth the wait and a few $$ more overall. Less FTF, cleaner, less headaches lol. My low ball junk plinker ammo is now CCI SV, it only goes up from there.

Remove the cartridge, rotate it a quarter turn and try it. Rimfire priming compound is liquid when applied inside the case and capillary action distributes it around the inside of the rim. Sometimes gaps occur in the priming compound of "consumer grade" rimfire ammunition.

Like Dewey said, it's usually missing primer compound in the rim area. Years ago bulk Rem seemed to be the winner. Couldn't get a cylinder of 6 to fire 100%. Always at least one, sometimes more would not fire. Dumped the fired ones, rotated the failed to fire ones approximately 180 degrees and added new ones to the empty holes. Usually only one or two out of the 500 would not fire after several attempt.

My bulk ammo, which is junk for accuracy gets shot in my revolvers and semiauto pistols. CCI Standard Velocity is the cheapest and the least accurate I shoot these days in my rifles, then it's up in quality in what my rifles like from there. My middle ground is SK Standard Plus.
I guess and sad to say that this is where things have come to.

It's CCI for me now. Shot 50 yesterday and no FTF.

The situation will only get better if supply starts to outstrip demand, which could be a long while. At that point, they'll be faced with either lowering price, reducing output, or increasing quality (or some combination thereof). But they're not even capable of producing the full range of ammo they advertize, so don't expect much. My guess is that over time, they won't focus on either price or quality, but delivering the specialty rounds that sell for more once the 22lr pipeline is going steadily. I'm just grateful the places like my local Walmart regularly sell bulk 22 now as opposed to nothing before November or so last year.

My real fear is that Euro ammo (SK, Lapua, RWS, Eley) will start to become scarcer, not just because of inflation, but because the recent war seems to have triggered a big surge in demand for shooting on the Continent based on all the reports I've seen or read.

Wildcat, super x and t22 are liable to shot patterns instead of groups anymore, at least in my firearms. That's when they go off. 5 or 6 out of a box of 50 seems the norm anymore.
