Rechamber 300 RUM barrel down to.....?

I have a Savage in 300 Rum with a sporter profile barrel. I am replacing it with a heavy varmint or heavy bull. Havent decide How much I want it to weigh. However I would like to save the barrel for another project, in a lighter caliber. What else could I do, with a setback and rechamber to something .30 cal

300 RSAUM or 300 WSM are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head.

300 RUM case has a .550 base diameter, and that will limit your options.

Not much room to set back a Savage factory contour barrel because of the taper. Also not worth the time/cost if you do come up with something that would work and clean up the old chamber. A new barrel, or some reduced loads/lighter bullets in the RUM would make more sense to me.

Possibly cut it back to 300 WSM but I wouldn’t bother with a fired factory barrel

Actually the diameter is .534 whick is close to the .532 of say a 300 win mag.

It's a rebated rim. My ADG 338 edge brass measures .546, new, never fired.

Your chamber is likely .550 in diameter around .2" from the casehead.

Thinking of moving down to a 308 ish power range. Looks like 300WSM might be an answer. Thinking a light load would be easier in that case than a RUM.

You’d probably have to cut most of the current chamber out to get it to clean up fully on a 284 based cartridge

If you cut too much off, it'll need more threads cut to fit the receiver. A sporter contour may not have enough OD for that.

It'll probably cost more to change it than what it's worth. You'd be better off trading it, or selling it and buying what you want.

Yes, but get a new prechambered 308 barrel. Rechambering a used 300 RUM sporter is not worthwhile. Savage has replaceable bolt heads to change out mag bolt head for 308 bolt head if you using the long action .
The long action is great for heavy bullets, get a 9 twist or 8 twist...get em going with 9 twist 22" barrel 200 Sierra MK 715 BC over 2700 fps, with 2000MR... Or Varget less speed but both are accurate. With today's powder prices this is a good option for many shooters, you can afford to shoot it, and ammo is available, if ya don't have components....a good "bad times" compromise.

The more I look into it, just doing another barrel is probably the way to go.
