Case fillers

So I play around a good little bit with cast out of my AR for 5.56 and recently out of my H&R for .223.
Well read about the use of case fillers to help with velocity swings and accuracy so I bout some poly fill batting a while back and finally got around to messing with it last night. Tried following the directions from a nice thread on cast boolits so just cut a chunk ,then cut that into a strip then lil chunks. Fluffed them out a bit then used my little tweezers to push it just past the case neck but not to there I pushed in into the powder. Just on topIMG_20220222_000020888.jpgIMG_20220222_000131335.jpgIMG_20220222_000949967.jpgIMG_20220222_001804678.jpgIMG_20220222_010349147.jpg
Can't really say it help any with accuracy though both of there where running weight sorted gas checked bullets @100yd the left was without the right was with IMG_20220222_150145460_1.jpg
Ma ye I don't do it correctly ? I know alot of people say you should weight you chunks but it just doesn't seem like the 16.9 gr of accurate 2015 I'm using really needs it. I did notice I lil extra umph to the recoil though. I hate my chrony wasn't working though because I really feel like my velocity went up.
Anyhow do any of you guys happen to use filler for cast or what have you ? I very curious now about other possibilities and applications even though I probably won't use this beyond the casting relm

As far as I'm aware, fillers are only needed with hard-to-ignite powders with poor fill ratios.

I doubt 223 (which uses a fairly fast, easy-to-ignite rifle powder, and generally a 75+% fill ratio) would gain anything from filling the airspace.

Then again, I've never messed with anything that required a filler, so I'd look to do more research on that.

I used a similar product with reduced loads of Unique and 4227 in 222, 220 swift with no issues. I shot jacketed bullets at 22 mag and 22 hornet velocities respectively

I've never used filler with cast in 222,223 and 22-250.ive never found a need for the extra step.John Alexander has shot the 223 with cast in matches in the CBA for years with faster powders and no fillers and won many matches.

I don’t care for fillers in my ammo or my food.

I would be searching for a cure for those groups.
I would suggest you go to a start load for what weight your shooting of the 2015. The filler was meant for hard to ignite powders, I never saw that with 2015, but I never cut it back that far either.

I have a BF pistol in 7US. I decided I was going to run some cast in it. I knew what my alloy would take as far as an issues with speed. Sized correctly, air cooled, lubed as has been done for over 100 years. I tried Unique,SR4759 and 5744, nothing to write home about. I noticed it was liking speed when it tried to group. I went to AA2015 as it was what I used with jacketed, I backed that off to a start load, it will group MOA out to 200 meters.
I have since tried this in other cartridges with cast with pretty good success rate. FYI all I tried were proven cast shooters to begin with.

Many will argue this, I do not shoot jacketed in my CB guns. Some mix back and forth with no ill effects so they say, never worked for me. I think I expect more from CB’s than a large majority do.

If i remember correctly, fillers were used in pistol rounds that were loading 3 - 4 Grs of bullseye or red dot in a 38 or 357 case.

I it kept you from double charging the load and it kept the powder back at the primer flash pocket.

God that was back in the 60's

Well this is a rather interesting thread as I had some experiences will 'fillers' way back when.

As luck would have it I picked up some AA 2230 and a bunch of Speer 130 gr. HPFB (.308) at a really good price. It is always hard to pass up a 'deal' right? Thought I could work up an acceptable 200 yd. slow fire load that would have light recoil but still some velocity.

A workable load left what I though was too much space in the case so I looked for some type of filler. Knowing I had to avoid anything that would contaminate the powder I began looking in my kitchen spice cabinet and came across an old shaker of Red Pepper flakes and thought, 'what the heck' this stuff should take up some space and used the flakes to suck up a bunch of space.

About a week later I go to a match (Across The Course) and start shooting the 'filler' loads. I was about in the middle of the targets with a couple of shooters to my right and there was a slight breeze blowing from my left to the right. Those shooters were from a neighboring state and not the most friendly and one could say they were 'laced up pretty tight'.

A couple of rounds go down range and I notice some movement/commotion to my right followed by some sneezing and shooters blowing their nose and reaching for something to wipe their eyes/nose.

Then it dawned on me, the Red Pepper flakes were being pulverized as they sauntered down the barrel behind the Speer 130 gr. HPBT and were dispersed in the wind toward the not so friendly shooters to my right.

Fortunately the breeze shifted and began blowing from behind and over my left shoulder and no one was the wiser. Needless to say keeping my composure was not the easiest as the desire to burst out laughing
almost force me to use up all the allotted time for that stage of fire.

That would be a great trick to pull on a 600 yd IBS match.

Thanks for the info..............

I had a little experience shooting cast in an 06 back in the day. It was popular enough then that Lyman published a loading manual just for cast bullets. The purpose of the filler ( Dacron back then) was to make sure the light charge of any powder was all near the primer for consistent ignition.

Started my step daughters hunting with reduced loads using imr4198 in 7/08 with filler out of an old jacket shoved in to keep powder back against primer. Good for moa at 100 and 200 yds killed deer dead as a magnum. Never a bad result or cleaning issue.
