TackDriver wind reading

Joe, it looks like You, Me, Wes, and Ed will be sharing a bench.

I think we had a good flag set at TackDriver11, you did a great job, except for one thing. The orange tails.

Might I suggest white Tails. I have found them the best to see out past 200 yards.

By the way. I agree Orangeburg was a real challenge. We were darned lucky it stayed overcast for the first eight targets. When that mirage came out Sunday afternoon……..

But you have shot Tomball. It’s not exactly a cakewalk. There are quite a few shooters who consider it the arm pit of the NBRSA.

Jackie, I am not at all adverse to trying white tails. They might be just the ticket for the longer distances. However, I am also not sure that I want to try surveyors tape rather than sail tails. I do believe the sail tails give a better reading than surveyors tape, particularly in the stronger winds like happen at Orangeburg.
At most any range, out past the 200 yard mark, heavy mirage gets to be a problem real quickly. Not as bad as the fog was for our 400 yard freezer match this year though. Mid match the fog settled down so heavy, we literally couldn't see the target frames, much less bullet holes.
Yes, Tomball can be a challenge. Actually, I think it is a challenge almost every time you sit down there. A number of times, I have gone to the line there without a flag on the field moving. You think, "Hot dog, here comes a zero for sure! Then you cannot make two bullets touch. Who was it after one match said, "I'm never coming back to this s^^^hole again?

Someone earlier asked about flagpole height. Mine are 12 feet tall and were entirely adequate on the right side of the range. But, the last one down could have been taller over on the left side of the range. Maybe 15 feet. However, the last flag was probably at 225 yards or so. It we had set one more down about 250 to 275, I feel sure on the left side, it would indeed need to be close to 20 feet tall. I also only had the far three on poles. The near two were on a couple of taller tripods that were entirely adequate. The range is fairly flat but the 300 meter targets are high up on the backstop, thus requiring the tall poles down range. They do need to step back down fairly quickly as they get closer to you. On Dusty's field of flags photo above, you can see my two tripod mounted flags right of center.
Also, We did not have the issue at tackdriver II but the range shoots southwest. On a sunny day, you get the sun in your eyes in the afternoon. At the first tackdriver, most benches had a blue tarp or something similiar hanging out in front of the bench to serve as a sunshade. It would pay to be prepared!

Jackie, how is it know who is on your bench already? This is my 1st trip to this match, do you get to pick your bench mates?

Ok. Are there any specific wind and flag tips for orangeburg? Other than the tall flag requirement. Any hints and tips from you shooters who are experienced there that you can share with us newcomers?
Some of us need all the help we can get. And then some!

a little advise for what it’s worth. Don’t shoot the full cross wind if at all possible wait it out. Look for an angling condition that wants to hang around a bit that tends to repeat
after a few relays you will recognize it coming around check a sighter to see if it prints where you think it should. Then go for it
by the end of the first day I knew my condition and saw it come in
I shot one sighter it hit where i expected it to. The condition held up just long enough

this was at TD-1

I will take 5 of those please.

Waiting on my condition to come around. Checking sighters as my condition comes in from the left
when I thought it was there and went to record and it hits where it should just keep shootin
I think my load was a little hot the last shot jumped out low
