Faux Panda

Today's project was turning a Davidson sleeved 722 into a Faux Panda. Will finish up the counter bores tomorrow and get it screwed, glued and tattooed.

screwed glued and tattoed----- You must be an old Navy man. Good luck with your project

Plopping the rail on there seemed like it would be as straight forward as plunging four holes down over the existing base screw holes in the sleeve, adding a counter bore to those holes, whipping up some epoxy, bolt/epoxy the whole lash up together and relax with an adult beverage or a cup of coffee, depending on the time of day.

Wrong! o_O

Things just weren't making sense and sparing all the "...gorey details" as Randy Robinett says, the issue boiled down to that the two existing inboard base holes were not in line with either the existing front or rear base screw holes.

My work around for this...right or wrong...was to position the base screw holes correctly over the holes in the sleeve, then offset the counter bored holes by the amount the base screw holes were off so they are visually correct down the long axis of the rail.

Like Ralphie in 'A Christmas Story' helping his Dad change the tire blurting out "Oh, f-u-d-g-e! " ;)

Good shootin' -Al

Nice work ;) I have a 722 I will be doing the same thing to. Just picked up this sleeve from a member on here for the job. I will be doing a picatinny rail on top. Might cut a couple inches off tho.
Need to get a large diameter barrel for it as well. Plan on doing a stepped double shoulder

Bolt in or glue in? -Al

Both. I’ve never done one before so kind flying from the seat of my pants and just going with what I think will work good. I already have the top of the 722 receiver drilled and tapped for 8-40 screws and glued in a single shot follower. Plan on bolting thru the sleeve to the receiver scope rail screw holes but only tightening enough to assist holding central alignment of the receiver in the sleeve as the glue cures. I also plan on making it a dual port action by milling in a left load port. Will probably pre-mill the steel receiver prior to gluing and then mill the sleeve after everything is together and glue is cured. That way I’ll have a good tooling guide when milling out the port on the aluminum sleeve to match them perfectly.

How was it inletting and bedding the stock? Did you mill out the inletting on a 700 SA stock, use a stock with different inletting, or start from a flat top blank?

I have a 700 footprint LR BR stock on the 722 right now and was planning on milling it out for the sleeve but wondering if there’s a better way to do it. Thanks.
