Bolt face and odd rim size compatibility

How much leeway is there on rim size vs bolt face size? Should a standard .308/30-06 bolt face work for rebarrelling to .35 Rem or to 6.5x55, without modifying the bolt? The rim on the .35 Rem is .014” smaller, and the 6.5x55 is .007” larger.

Some custom actions will not accept a x55 case head, but many will.

Also some Remington's that have a riveted extractor can be tight with the 55 case. A little bit smaller shouldn't be a problem in anything.

When I rebarreled a Rem. 700 30/06 to 6.5 x 55 -it wasn't the rim diameter that caused a problem but rather the narrow extraction groove on the Lapua case that prevented 100% reliability to extract. Others that went the same route claimed Winchester cases worked fine.

you can easily trim base diam to fit a tight bolt .some bolts will take a 35 rem size , some won’t. Notmuch help but it usually is up to your bolt .

Howdy !

I had no problems with chambering or extracting either fired cases or unfired cartridges, when I was shooting my " .22-35 Remington " wildcat in my Wichita WBR 1375 single shot benchrest action. It is .308 bolt face.
Fred Sinclair had installed an AR-15 style extractor in my rifle. He told me that a Sako type would also have worked.

The ejector in the rifle might possibly also be another consideration.

My Wichita's bolt would not accomodate rim diam of the 6.5 X 55.

Can't speak to .35 Rem use in a Remington pattern action. They did chamber for .35 Rem in some Model 7s
and of course in the XP-100.

FWIW - P.O. Ackley once wrote me a response letter, where in ( amongst other things ) he stated that he thought I'd would have had no trouble if I had shot my .35 Rem - based wildcat; using a .308 bolt face
( he did not specify any particular bolt action ).

I built a 6.5x55 on a Stiller Predator and all brass fit in the bolt, just fine. PPU and Lapua. If it doesn’t work, you can always shave a little off the rim if you don’t want to cut the bolt.

I re-barreled a Winchester M70 from .243 to .35 Rem with no issues. Looked at doing a Tikka T3 .35 Rem and it was borderline. In my opinion it needed some mods to extract reliably, so I made it a .358 instead.
