I feel like I’m not keeping up…

XTR

F-TR obssessed shooting junkie
… with the prices for firearms.

I’m at that place where I have more than I need but not all I want when it comes to guns. So for the things I want or “kind of want“ I will keep an eye out and browse, sometimes for yrs till I see the deal that pulls the $$ from my checking acct.

Lately I’m continually amazed at prices on everything. Just two examples; I’ve been watching for a falling block that is or can be a 30-40, a 45 S&W. Holy crap. Old Ruger #3s with lumber from Lowes for stocks in 30-40 are typically north of $1200-1400 these days. The reality is that every Ruger 1/3 out there is at that price point or higher, and every S&W ever made is $1200+. These are the ones that are selling. There is a Ruger #1 action on GB right now at over $1000 and it’s got a while to go.

I really think I’m going to CPA or C. Sharps for a custom 30-40. The difference in price isn’t that bad any more.

Could re-barrel...

It sucks even more if you remember buying an old Mauser in good shape for $50!
Now isn’t really the time to buy. Things are too crazy out there. Keep looking for a deal but you may have to wait a few years. Also, explore the differences between want and need.
I want that gorgeous lever rifle in 45 Colt that’s in the classifieds right now but for $1800++, I find I don’t “need” it that bad.

Be careful with the auction sites. There seems to be more and more shill bids. The auction ends with the item sold then the same gun comes up for sale by the same seller. Whether or not the buyer consigns it back to the same seller is the question one has to answer. It takes a little digging in the "advanced" and completed item pulldowns but have seen it more than once.

Patience is always a good way to go. I have found that my wants can be fulfilled if I just am diligent over time keeping an eye out. The itch to have a pre-64 model 70, or an F-class rifle built on a Robertson Composites stock eventually all got scratched. Not being in a hurry is the key. At least us men "of a certain age" probably have all the guns we need and then some, so being in a hurry is not needed. Imagine being a 20 year old without a rifle right now. That would suck.

All this crap makes me happy I did not get in a rush to sell what I thought I did not want anymore think I'll keep some of them.
Was planning on ordering a few new barrels this year but at 100.00 more per than last year NO, made me appreciate a few used barrel deals instead.

As said before, Was going to order 2 new 22s but settled on an old 44

When my little sister wanted a rifle, I checked out a few factory offerings. By a few, I stopped at Ruger and Winchester. A Hawkeye was nearly $1400 MSRP, and a Model 70 with Cerakote was $1800.

We rebarreled a Kimber Montana to 6x47 Lapua. It’ll repeatedly shoot 1/4” 3 shot groups, and cost less than the Model 70.

I'm trying awful hard not to put this one back up on GunBroker. I could darn near get a new FX or Air Arms if I sold it, but....

XTR: I'm in the same situation as you looking for a falling block. Prices are up there for sure. I just keep watching for the right one. CPA makes beautiful rifles but more than I want to spend. Good Luck!

I sold a number of guns last year from an estate. I had about 1 in 8 buyers refuse to pay after placing a winning bid or back out of a buyitnow purchase. I actually had to relist an item 3 times after it had sold.

Here are my thoughts on the cost. These days a basic Ruger #1 in any chambering sells for nearly $2000, Italian Sharps rifles are running in the range of $1500+ (which is more than I paid for my C.Sharps, granted it was about 8 yrs ago), Montana Sharps rifles are starting north of $3k.

Starting price on a CPA is under $3k and when you’re finished it’s a custom for you,

MVA also sells a modern exact copy of a Highwall action. That may be my pathway. My problem is as soon as I start to build a custom i spec a blank that costs more than the action. I like pretty wood. o_O
