375 H&H vs. The 338 Win Mag.

I'm a 375 fan myself. I've only used 4 or 5 & owned one over the years. Every 338 WM hunting rifle I've played around with a few times. It must be me. The 338 pounds me something awful. Never had one in my hands I enjoyed shooting. The big Ouch n Ouch I like messing around with it. Oh & out to say 150yds The bigger bullet has the edge. Mike in Ct

Im a huge 375 H&H fan.Its a very flexible cartridge that reacts well with reduced loads in the 38-55 power range with cast bullets. My CZ (Brno 602) is near MOA with such loads quite often.A bonus is I can take 50 rounds to the range and shoot them all up with no pain .

I've used both on game. With bullets of approximately equal sds, not a lot of difference. But it is easier to load a higher sd bullet in the .338. Velocity is higher in the .338 with a little better trajectory. Ammo for the .375 is easier to obtain in Africa. I have not seen a lot of difference in knockdown power for the .375. To see this in the field, you need to jump up to .416 or .458 with a major increase in recoil. I have found the sharpness of recoil is related to high pressure loads with a high velocity gas exit.
Both the .338 and .375 are suberb with well placed shots using bullets constructed for the intended game. This is the most important thing.
I would probably choose the 275 gr in the .338 over the 300 in .375 but comparisons are difficult due to the many factor involved.

I shot some deer with a Rem 700 factory 338 WM using 160g Barnes TTSX at 3200, very, very accurate and just slaughtered the deer. A friend's dream was to have a barrel like the 338, so he got dies, barrel, bullets, still shooting it to this day.... was 15 years ago.

Light Barnes triple shock bullets traveling at those speeds are deadly on smaller game. Accuracy is superb in many loads. The 250gr is a good choice for larger game and I've had many loads grouping three shots much less than one
moa.

I thought about another thing that increases the impact effect on large animals and that is increasing the weight of the bullet. Observing buffalo in Africa revealed a difference between a 400 and 450 gr in .416 and a 500 and 550 gr in .458. Recoil really goes up but you can see the animal sag more at the hit. I prefer to go up in caliber.
