Suggestions for Scout scope mount on an old Mauser 45/70

I have an old Siamese Mauser in 45/70. I have a long eye relief scope I want to mount on it. It has a small rear sight on it now. The cut is only about an inch long, so I can’t use one of the rails that are made for the typical larger Mauser rear sight. What would be a good way to get her done?
Thanks!

Nope. Seen ‘em. Heard about them. Read rave reviews in the gun mags about them, years ago. Figured I’d try one.

If it were me I would get a piece of scope rail blank and make one. I dont think you will find anything to fit off the rack. The Siamese conversions I had were iron sighted or had conventional weaver mounts on the receiver. Those are cool conversions and can support some pretty robust loadings. If you plan to take advantage of the strength the action provides you will need a good solid scope and mount setup. I dont think you will be able to avoid having to drill and tap some holes in the barrel. The radius on the base to match the barrel diameters can be cut with a boring head fairly easily.

I don't know if you have access to a machine shop, but you could take a picatinny rail made for a rear sight installation and machine the lower extension for the dovetail that the existing rear sight fits into. Here is a typical rail that is what I am talking about. These are made of aluminum, so they are easy to machine.

An issue for Scout scope:

a. they have critical eye relief

b. not worth a darn in low light conditions...period

c. sun coming in over your shoulder will make the scope useless

I put one on a 8x57 sporterized German Mauser, very accurate rifle, limited in it's deer hunting application

ON a scout scope, it is usually mounted on the barrel...can of worms in the least...Extended Eye Relief scopes(EFR) were a step in the wrong direction for me. However, mine is a gorgeous Safe Queen that shoots 1/2-3/4" groups. I built the rifle for jump shooting deer.

Thanks for the link! I think I may just keep the Siamese as is for now and try it open sighted. I just loaded some lite loads to try. If it shoots well, I can have it drilled.I just have to remember to find my glasses. I ordered the mount to try on some other Mausers I have. $13 isn’t a big risk.

those mounts do not last , even on a 8 mm let along a 45-70 . Iveshot 500 gr solids out of that rifle , ONCE , ouch . Then a few 350 grs . Still thumpers . But I was In my 20s and everything was loaded hot and heavy . Drill and tap and use a small , short 1” 1-4x or a shot gun weaver scope ( old steel type )
A muzzle brake would help with the shoulder dislocation. That stock design makes it kick harder than both my 458s .
at least the way I use to load .

ive used the S&K no -drill scope mounts with GREAT success on numerous different rifles . Unfortunately they do not list the Siam . Careful measurements and a call to them should help .

This is my 458x2 mauser using a leupold rds and a xs sights scout mount. It is glued and screwed in place. Works quite well. I may swap for a smaller red dot type sight.

Josh, maybe I missed it, but is your action drilled & tapped for scope bases? I went through the selection of Weaver bases for my VZ-24 not long ago.

No, it’s not drilled yet. I was trying to avoid scope eye with the scout scope idea.

I use the S&K steel mount on the rear sight of my Spanish Mauser and it works great. However, I have one of the cheapo aluminum ones on my Mosin Nagant Model 44 carbine and it works just as well.

Wow, Gary! 500 grain? Oh to be young again! I have some medium to warm Marlin loads with 350s I made up years ago and I loaded up some mild 300 grainer Trapdoor loads to try. I’ll be shooting 3 shot groups to “save components”!;)
