Bag or Bi-pod

I know I should try both on the same day w the same ammo at distance. That said I may need to buy or shorten my smaller Harris to use w this 22 sporter in 100M competition. Note: we are not allowed to use a rear bag. So getting low and steady on the bench is important to me. What say you guys of the rimfire world ??? Should I modify the bi-pod to suit this game or stick w the bag the club provides for our match ? mikeinct

Learn to shoot with the bag, it's free. My opinion of bags vs bi-pods is it's which ever one learns to shoot with and what the rules allow.
my .02.

Do you have the shorter benchrest Harris Bi-pods? If not get the shorter set. I would try both the bi-pods and the bag, see what shoots best for you.

Mark I may have this wrong..but I have the tall & the med. [I believe medium Ht.] height Harris Bi-pods. If they make one half of my Med. it still might be too tall. We shoot looking down hill from a bench & the close in targets are a B^^^^ to level up on... mike

At My 22 rimfire matches my firing line is higher than most of the target racks which helps being able to see misses easier hitting relatively close behind the target. The 25 yard rack is probably 6 ft lower than the benc top, I really keep it just because it let's shooters have a close easy to hit target to be able to slightly tweak settings, settle down but it also makes the shooter figure out how to get comfortable trying to get the rear of the stock up higher than is comfortable.

Everyone fought with elevating the rear way up due to their bipod height. One day a shooter brought their wife over for the first time. She got on the bench, saw what was needed after watching other shooters struggle and then calmly folded the bipod legs up against the gun, laid it on a nice sandbag and ran the close couple of racks like a champ.

When needed she folded the legs back down and continued. All the seasoned shooters just looked at each other and wondered why they hadn't thought of doing that. Harris style bipods are great but the newer higher priced bipods like the Accu-tac let you adjust the legs forward or backward to get more height adjustment.

Get a shorter bipod. I use the BRM-S on my rimfire and centerfire rifles. If you need shorter for a stage as mentioned fold it up. Been doing that for many years.

What club is it?

I never thought to fold up the legs. THANK YOU ALL !!! This match is held up at Ridgway Rifle Club in Elk County Pa. 40 targets to 100M. These are the sample targets from two years ago. The production run we shoot at are about 30% smaller. These samples are only used by Jr. shooters during a match..

With the bipod it is always in the exact same location on the rifle. The bag will require more discipline to make sure you are consistent in where the forearm rests on the bag as it will affect POI on most rifles.

Looks like a match we shoot in NC with 20 steel targets at 50, 100 and 150 but some classes just shoot to 100. 4 different sized targets at range. It’s fun. I didn’t know if it was in CT or not.

I shot the last match of the season which was their championship shoot there at Ridgway. What a blast! So much fun I decided to put a new CZ 457 varmint MTR under a spare scope that I had to get involved in this shoot. I used the club provided front bag and did not have any problems using it. I saw there were some guys shooting a bipod. I would think when moving from left to right on the targets the the legs on the bipod would not move smoothly on the bench. There are probably some other bipod‘s on the market that would swing left to right more freely than a Harris. Of course weight is a factor. Being new to this game I am going to keep my options open and may do some experimenting. I do like that you can’t use a rear bag, that adds at least a little bit of human element into shooting which I think is all important.

Rob,
Where in NC are your matches held.

Ridgeway is one of them towns in PA that you can see the old time PA town and ponder about how things were back-in-the-day. And that range is outstanding as is the surrounding area. Thought of retiring there but moved south in stead. Snowphobia was the deciding factor.

I love it when the girls show the boys how it's done!

Nice range Topstrap!

Great question. I can tell you that they both have a purpose and both have pros and cons. I prefer a bipod if height and time allows, but I am never married to it. I prefer a bag if there is a lot of movement and I can use a bag with great results.
Too often when we are reliant on only one method, we will struggle to find a way to always use that. I have seen countless times where a competitor has a certain size bag or bipod, even though that rest is too large or too small, time out trying to make their method work. Even to the point of seeing others have success with a different product and refuse to use it even though it is offered to them. I often learn more from watching others on what worked and what did not when tackle a prop.
Practice multiple scenarios and build confidence in your gear and do not be afraid to change it up and borrow if needed.

Easy.....bag.

No rear bag is dumb. Intentionally making things unstable only hurts the new shooters. I hate it when MD's do this. Some MD's are living is the past some and some are too PMS for their own good.

I would shoot it properly and take the zero for score.
