ring marks on a scope ?

I try not to but I get a few ring marks and acope dings...even buying good rings and torqueing them as recommended they have slipped on heavy recoiling rifles...but mostly I tend to bump them and knock em around...so I don't worry about it much anymore...a scope is a tool that if used, will get a few "character flaws". I don't worry about resale value I'm gonna use it until it quits. You could just mask up the lens and paint it cammo or flat black alumahide from Brownells is pretty tough...My Vortex 4.5- 27x 56 HD Razor is pretty scratched up but it works just fine on my 6 dasher. The turrent knobs on the old Leupold mark 4 are hardly even anodized anymore as they were turned up and down for 20 plus years...dial and smile mode... but it still works and is now on the 50BMG.

I have to say you are not buying quality regardless what you're paying,, "IF",, they are properly torqued mounted and lapped regardless of heavy caliber!

If you are nocking anything around then I see where marks are from, but good rings properly mounted and torqued don't move, and will not blemish your scope!!

As for that Lueppy, better keep it, I never owned a Leopold that lasted doing much dialing even on a 6ppc, and I used a few much better than a MK IV!

I have used hockey tape. now the question will be what happens to the scope when I take the tape off in three more years, plus the two yrs. the tape has been on the scope. may be discolored. I have also been messing with the signature rings.

I agree 100% with johara1 !! I use nothing but Burris Signature Zee Rings. PERIOD!! Your scopes will never be marked again. I was taught by a Master Gunsmith from this site " THE PREACHER " Anything that man tells you can take to the bank it is the right way to do it.

I *only* use Burris Signature rings unless I am using Valdada rings, which for 40mm tubes I have to. I would say I use equal +/- front and back on the Signature rings to generally center my scope at the distance I shoot most at, or to split the difference between 600 and 1,000 for F class. What I *don't* advise is unequal front/rear or, for that matter side-to-side (you can use Signature rings to correct wild windage variations as well as elevation), because bending or twisting your scope is the best way I know to break it.

You ask who cares? I sure do. I know it doesn't harm the scope for shooting but it sure spoils the resale value. Everything I have is pristine. I like my stuff that way. And I haven't seen them discounted much with ring marks and dings. So I would guess you are in the majority all right. I just wouldn't buy any without a really big discount. Good thing we aren't all the same. Or those people with beat up scopes would be losing a lot of money.

I can assure you my rifles and shotguns are as pristine as any in the us. Even my hunting rifles have BR quality paint jobs with no flaws. Scopes that are for one time mounting for the life of the rifle are always new and scratch free but BR scopes that get swapped out a lot seem to get ring marks with the rings that actually hold br scopes. Its just the way it is. I wish somebody made rings that held good enough but made no marks. Until then ill just have to deal with the ring marks. Ive sold at least 50 br scopes on here with varying ring marks- the new owners never complained. I dont dent the tubes but there always seem to be aluminum marks on them
