Time for the black-eyed peas and hog jowls ya'll

I just use bacon drippings for seasoning all that stuff except the black eyed peas, use chopped up country ham for that. Having greens with fresh pork, black eyed peas, okra & tomatoe, rutabagas and home made cornbread for dinner today. Feel lucky already just to be able to enjoy all that stuff.

A meal fit for a King right there. Had the collard greens, fried bacon and cornbread.

made a pot of split pea soup this morning
When I was a Kid, my step dad was an ASS! (can I say that?) I remember having to stay at the table till I finishes everything on my plate. Nothing like COLD split pea soup for a Kid. :(
Today, Split Pea Soup, a good Ham Hock (hard to find good ones anymore) lots of onions and a BIG hunk of Corn Bread with enough butter on it that it runs down your chin.
I always heard it was Black Eyed Peas, Possum Belly, Greens and Grits. Love me some fresh Swiss Chard , flash fried with bacon. MMMMM Good!!
Getting hungry just thinking about it.

German & Polish here in PA.
Pork butt roast with sauerkraut, mashed potatoes.
Throw a pack of hotdogs in at the end.

Don't forget to add the beer to the sauerkraut when cooking!

Bon appetite!!
I'll use a slightly sweeter Scottish ale, This year, we just smoked
a pork butt and baked sweet potato. Not much interest for the
kraut this year.

Kenny I'll do kraut and kielbosi thru out the year, but never before
a match. Don't want to be rude to yinz....LOL

Pork butt with sour kraut, onions and few apple slices. Cook with some hot sausage and serve with mashed potatoes. Have been doing it for over 50 years for New Years. Oh, cook in crockpot for about 5 hours.

there is a reason for that southern tradition. I hope that my northern friends wont be offended because we are one nation under God now. Those who have done internet searches have came to a similiar discription. During the civil war (none of my family is for slavery), while all the able body men and 14 to 18 yo boys were off doing battle. Many left barefooted taking only the family squirrell rifle and a schatchel of cornmeal. None of my anscestors could afford land an did not have slaves. While they were gone the women, children and feeble men were left with no weapons other than a slingshot. The Yanks came thru. (The Rebs did the same in the north) and stole, burned or destroyed everything. They left the cowpeas because the thought only livestock ate them. They left the pigs heads because they were worthless. The patch of greens did not burn. As passed down by my ancestors, thats how we survived. I hope this does not offend anyone. But this is the way it was passed down to me. Happy new year to all

Not far, Maybe 30 mi. I have moved from where you last came. I'm in between Kennedy and Vernon now. Is Danny and Johnnie going to dublin? Sent pm with my address if you want to see it on the map

First NBRSA registered short range match I ever shot was at Fayette around 2003. It was a nice range.
Last time I saw Johnny was 2006 IIRC. We shared a bench at Riverbend. I remember it being a good bench for both of us.
Happy New Year everyone!
