when was the smk 168 boat tail changed ?

ok the original 168 was a 300 meter competition bullet with a SHORT RANGE boat tail.
some where in its life the boat tail was changed to a long range boat tail.
my guess is some time around the introduction of the 175 mk.
sierra is closed, so i cannot ask the source.

They have the new 169 for long range with longer boat tail and closed nose. Stays stable at 1000 yards.

The 168 MK boattail has not changed since its inception to my knowledge.

The 180 SMK boattail was changed back in the late eighty's I think it was. Shooters were not real happy with the change. The 168 has not changed to the best of my knowledge.

@6bra1k any chance you mean the other 169 version (SKU2268C) rather than the old 168 SMK (SKU 2200C)?

They made a 168 match king # 2200 then introduced a 155 match king # 2156 which was for longer range per Sierra. The 168 has a dedicated machine just for that bullet only per Sierra.

i think the 2 look diff in oal...and who knows on the boat tail.... just looking for a date. and to the others..THIS is what i am talking about.

Other than normal manufacturing tolerances the only differences in the original offering and what is made today is the dropping of the name International. The original boattail length and angle has not changed on the #2200 part number bullet.

Yes, I have seen some of the old International boxes before loading them in LC Match brass in .30-06. My Dad was one of the first to adopt these in the M1 Garand days when I was in diapers. As I understand it, the 168's limitations beyond 700 yards (transsonic and subsonic) are from a 13° boat tail. Easier to manufacture and didn't matter in the now-defunct 300 meter Olympic event.
