M1A / M14

Naw, ancestors were oppressed by the Nazi's and killed more of them than they cared to talk about. Your pic is bit over the top. The post was simply to expand on the corrected spelling with a comment on how to pronounce German words with an ie or ei. Guess I've never been compared to a Nazi for just making a simple comment. Merry Christmas to you nonetheless.

With a M1A, if a short chamber is cut, the only way I know to finish hand cut the chamber is with a special reamer from Clymer that has long steel rod that is feed from the muzzle that then threads into the front of the reamer, then the reamer is pulled foreword with a T handle on the end of the steel rod sticking out of the muzzle end. The reason for this elaborate, and expensive reamer system is once the barrel is installed in the receiver, a conventional reamer can’t be used because of the receiver design. I never had done this, but Clymer is in my neck of the woods, and over the years my shooting buddy and I had visited Clymer many of times to either pick up a reamer, or headspace gauges, or just to see what wildcat cartridges people had dreamt up, and remember asking about their M1A chamber finish reamer, and it was demonstrated for us. Just something to consider. Brownells has this. These are screenshots of the reamer system.

PT&G is $40.00 less including the pull through rod.

The $199+ price above is certainly not expensive when compared the the JGS reamers pricing now.

JGS prices from their website:

But, as the saying goes, 'Dance with who you brung'!

Enjoy!

Before I set up my shop, they rebarreled my LRB with 6XC.

Krieger will only offer theirs in 308, any other cailber, you can also contact Westwind Rifles, Sully will fix you up

You can also contact TonyBen LLC. He has some hammer forged M14 barrels.

I turned down and chambered a 338 Federal M1a barrel from a blank (what a pain). That's one thumper cartridge worth considering.

One caution.

while you want to setup a bolt action and perhaps a AR-15 with a chamber at “GO” headspace dimension, with an M14 / M1A I always used “GO + .002” as my minimum chamber dimension. This was to reduce the probability of slam fires. The military 7.62 NATO cartridge has a neck-shoulder radius different than 308. It is a bit larger. This means that a round at the bigger end of the spectrum might be just big enough to be stopped a few thousandths before it’s fully chambered. It acts very much like a poorly sized reload. In the M1A that can be a cause of slamfires. By chambering .002 deeper, this phenomenon is minimized. Max was still GO + .004. When I was shooting we were using M118 and M852 Match so compatibility with service ammo was required. Even though that requirement may be outdated, I’d still use the “GO plus .002” as my minimum chamber.

Good info thanks

One of my best friends grew up in maine and went to the maritime academy there. His first experience with a true redneck more than just in passing was me. Me and him and a nigerian that worked for me went to a restaurant in houston and the waitress didnt understand a word neither of them said. I had to translate and she laughed that that may have been the first time a redneck had to translate for an african and a yankee. He taught me that khakis and car keys are the same word
To complete the challenge, you needed a fisherman from Aberdeen Scotland in your party.

It was a very shady place, not for the faint of heart with an on duty houston police officer standing by the counter for your protection but it was the best bbq in houston and we were addicted
