6.5 Creedmoor Preferred Bullet Weight?

Bought a savage factory take-off barrel from NSS earlier this year, it shoots pretty good. I am it using for 600 and 1000 yd target shooting and deer on open 40 acre field. Started of with hornady 140 hpbt match, they did very well but not very fast so a good bit of drop. Switch to 130 eld match which have about the same bc but are much faster, almost 3000 fps so they hold up better. Want to try 130 sierra gamechanger or berger eld, any of you use those.

Berger 140 Hybrid targets. Hard to find now. Looks like they might have been replaced by something a couple grains heavier and pointed from the factory. Might order up a batch of those.

If your are looking for one bullet, then try the Berger 140g, 135g or 130g vld hunting bullet.
You are shooting out to 1000yds. and hunting deer on a 40 acre field.
Have might have to choose something in-between high B.C. and good expansion.

Personally I'd say the 130-135 is ideal for the CM. The 130 ELD from Hornady or the 135 Berger.

Considering a 40 acre field if sized as the 40acre parcel goes is 440 yards both ways. 440 isn't exactly a range that needs any kind of upper end BC in a bullet. Any game bullet will work just fine. Even a 125 Nosler Partition has over 2000 fps impact velocity at 500 yards. Well over 1000 ft lbs

We have a shooting house that is dragged to center of field after corn or soy bean is harvested. There's a lane that was cut thru the woods to create a thousand yd range, with the shooting house 200 yds into field an 800 yd shot is possible, have seen deer at 1000 yd target even when were shooting. The 130 eld hits the steel plate pretty hard at a thousaand yards.

Sounds like a long 40 not a square 40. Perfect for a shooting range. The ELDs are killers.

+1.

6.5CM Winchester Gold Medal with 130gr Berger OTM helped me realize that over 140gr is not necessarily the "end all" for the Creedmoor.

I dont think a 1000 yard shot should ever be taken at a game animal. 400 maybe for a very experienced shooter. Come shoot some matches and you will see why.
Respectfully appreciate that response as your correct with many that don't shoot enough. Still 1000 yards on an animal is not very realistic. Conditions need to be very good almost perfect. We know that's just not often. 400 yards however is a chip shot if your a shooter. I don't even like to shoot under 500 yards much anymore on targets. Load development I'll start there but only for accuracy then move out. As long as the wind isn't behind 15 and gassing inconsistently, 400 yards is a slam dunk on deer or larger game. Beyond 600 things can get goofy with wind.

I don't hunt, was using Berger 140 VLD's, I now am using Lapua 139 Scenars. I have some Hornady BTHP's but haven't played with them yet.

I have not found anything that beats the Hornady 135 gr. A-Tips in 6.5 CM. I am shooting them through a Hawk Hill Customs barrel on a Savage model 10 action. I think that they would be “over kill” for most hunting but they are incredibly consistent in target shooting. Yes, I know they are expensive but when I consider all of my other expenses in gear and reloading supplies the extra $100 they cost me in a typical year is worth it to me (compared to Bergers).

It really depends on range. The longer the range, the heavier you go. I personally like 147s beyond 600, 140s for 300-600, and 130 or less inside 300.

if you’re getting the 130s nearly 3000fps, the 123s are good for 3100.

Shoot what shoots best, life is short.

3110 out of a 28" Hawk Hill with a 123 scenar.

Try some 136 scenar L's for half the money, they might surprise you.

440yds x 440yds = 40 acres

1/4 mi = 160 ac
1 mi = 640 ac

Example: Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley, Calif. It's a tad over 600ac for the spot.
