7mm Rem Mag Rebarrel; which caliber?

Then the 7mm Wsm will match your 7mm mag or go A little over depending on throat. With the long action you will probably be over your mag. So many options...so little time!
Options, options, indeed!

The 7mm LRC is non belted.
And i believe the body is 0.532", like the belt on the Rem Mag. So there is a capacity increase.

And just so your aware, Peterson is now making 7mm Rem Mag brass.
Check out Grafs, or Euro Optics.
I have been signing up for notification on different brass at as many places as possible. Like so many things right now, OOS.

I'll go another route. The 284 win on a long action. Less barrel wear than the 7RM and can achieve better velocity than factory 7mm mag ammo. It's a win, win if your worried about eating up barrels from fast magnum cartridges. I suggested it thinking maybe you wanted a step up in performance. The 284 win is ideal for getting more mileage than the 7 mag and close performance.
I had thought about 284 Win but requires a different bolt face.

Those two are very different powders. Full case of each hits pressure with very different bullet weights. Hard to optimize behind a single twist rate with these two powders.

I'd say 7 rem mag and 300 win mag are your best bet. The short mags don't have the boiler room for retumbo and the super overbore magnums cant use 7828 well. So something in the middle like the 7RM and 300 win mag can use both. 180s/retumbo and 150-168s/7828 in 7rm. 230s/retumbo and 200s and 7828 in 300 win.

8.5ish twist for the 7mms

9ish twist for 30 cal.
The 7828 is something I picked up along the way somewhere for cheap. H1000 and Retumbo have been what I have used before with success on my RM. The 7828 seemed finicky to tune with I was shooting 162's.

Sorry for yet another which caliber thread but looking for some input from those that have taken this path numerous times.

I have a Remington 700 in 7mm Rem Mag that is getting near to the end of it's accurate life. This started out life as a factory Rem 700 Long Range (B&C Stock) that was inlet by CDI a few years back for AICS mags. I mainly shoot groups at 500 and in plus steel out to 1350 with the occasional trip to the desert to shoot a mile.

I plan on doing a remage rebarrel myself and would like to stick to the same bolt face diameter. I am considering 6.5 PRC but I do like the 7mm selection of bullets that I use and am familiar with. If I was to stay with 7mm and not do a RM again; what should I be looking at? Does 7mm WSM work fine from a magazine on a long action?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Cheers.
A 7wsm will feed perfectly good but you'll have to open the feedlips slightly for the .550 case diameter.
I really dig the wsm but now that ADG is releasing 300 wsm brass I decided to have a 7-300 wsm wildcat reamer made.
It's a 45 degree shoulder but maintains the longer 300 wsm neck, and has .250 freebore for 180s.
It's called the 7-300 Long Range Improved
I just sent the reamer to mcGowen barrel to have my prefit chambered.
I'll start a thread when it's complete

Yep forgot magnum bolt face.

Take a look at the 7mm Mashburn Super Magnum. I know you said you didn't want a belt but IMHO this is the best of the belted 7mms. A simple neck down of .300 WM brass and you are in business.

Sounds like a riot. What kind of velocity with 162 or 180's?

I never shot the 180 grain bullets in mine but according to my notes my mild fire forming loads with the 160 grain Sierra were averaging 3227 from a 24" barrel. I was building a 28" barreled long range hunting rifle on a 700 action with an 8 twist barrel to shoot the 175 - 180 grain bullets and sent my barrel blank, action and reamer to a "gunsmith" and I got back a barreled action that was basically worthless, nothing concentric, too short, having been set back at least twice with the threads mangled and on top of it all my reamer had a broken flute. I pulled the barrel, tossed it in the junk box and sold off the rest of the rifle components. It left such a bad taste in my mouth that I haven't revisited the project yet. I have another 700 sitting in the safe that I need to do something with though. I did my preliminary testing of the Mashburn with a rechambered Savage 7mm RM barrel and didn't really try to push anything too hard but I don't think 3200 fps. would be out of the question with the 180s out of a 26" barrel. Dang it, now you have me thinking again, I was all set to build a .284 on that Remington action but it won't take any longer to get another Mashburn reamer than a .284 and I already have dies and brass...

Just rebarrel to 7mm Remington Mag... there are several do it yourself prechambered manufacturers...bug nuts.. Southern Precision Rifles comes to mind...get or borrow a belted mag go gage and install the barrel yourself... easy. And ya have all the brass, dies, powder, etc for the 7 mag. It works.. no need to chase the propaganda and fantasy land of micro inches, the better brand new caliber propaganda with all these new rounds...I've done it, with a few of them, many are fun... but the real advantage is between your ears.

I went through this exact same decision on the exact same caliber. in an old Sendero that transformed into a Long Range hunting and Steel target rifle. I also have shot it over 1 mile many times. In the end.. I decided there was nothing wrong with the 7mm Rem Mag, Plus i had Norma Brass, Dies. After I had the new barrel on it i was glad i didnt switch. I have a bunch of other rifles to keep up with and this was the easy button with no Regrets. None. I am now on my third barrel and still no regrets.

7MM Rem Mag
I am beginning to think this might be the best move. I have familiarity, supplies, tools which makes it the easy button for sure.

Nothing wrong with sticking with the Rem 7mm Mag. Since you shot out this barrel and it was doing what you wanted and you know what bullets it shoots and has been working, why even consider another cartridge.
Go with what has been doing the job you want and re-barrel with the same cartridge, which you are all set up with, i.e. dies, etc.
