Anschutz 54.30

Any pros or cons for the 54.30? Is the Anschutz Custom Shop worth the extra expense and what do you get for it?

From the rimfire central forum:

When the 54.30 was introduced, the following details were given:

- Basis for the new rifle is the well known and reliable ANSCHÜTZ Match 54 action.
- The loading port was moved 30mm rewards and was reduced in size by 18%.
- These changes increases the stiffness of the receiver.
- The closer location of the loading port allows for less movement when in position and an overall improvment in shooter ergonomics.
- To accomodate the closer location of the loading port, the bolt and the firing pin were reduced in length by 30mm.
- The weight of the firing pin was also reduced, thus resulting in velocity increase of the firing pin and a shorter lock-time.
- The overall accuracy has been improved by a newly designed ANSCHÜTZ Match chamber.
- Unlike match actions in the past, the new Match 54.30 features a threaded receiver and barrel connection. This change removes stresses in the chamber area and further increases accuracy.
- The new Match 54.30 can be installed into all available stocks which fit with the ANSCHÜTZ round match actions such as the 1907 or 1913.

As noted above, the 54.30 uses the same stocks as the 19xx models. The 54.30 barrel is similar to the xx07 profile in terms of length (660mm) and diameter (22mm). By comparison the xx13 barrel profile is 690mm long and 24mm in diameter. The 54.30 barrel is not dovetailed for a front sight and should come with a barrel extension for mounting such a sight.

As far as the custom shop, if you want bedding or a different stock, such as a Kelbly fiberglass, it's all up to you and how much you want to spend. At that level of expense, a totally custom rifle might make more sense if you have access to a gunsmith who can manufacture the gun for you. On the other hand, if you just want an Anschutz because, well, it's an Anshutz, then I would just buy a factory gun from them and have their gunsmith bed it.

The loading port is still much farther forward compared to Walther, G&E, and Bleiker so if you’re a sling/prone shooter it’ll probable affect your position by creating more movement when loading (YMMV).

As above, the 54.30 is a refinement of the 1913 (or rather the 1907) The basic receiver footprint is the same. So is the trigger, and the firing pin is almost identical, just shorter. The big difference is that the barrel is screwed in, and for about 2.5in instead of 1.2in: the 30 refers to the bolt being 30mm (1.2in) shorter.

If you already have an Anschutz 54 a 54.30 will drop in. For a Position shooter who has invested in a good modern stock and accessories, buying 54.30 barrel/action is much cheaper than a new Bleiker or Walther KK500.

The downside to the 54.30, at least for Anschutz's core Position shooting market, is that the breech is still further away than its rivals. The barrel has more support than a 54, but Anschutz's rivals offer (or at least appear to offer) more rigid receivers too. The 54.30 shares the 1900s proven 5018 trigger, which s a great trigger, but a 40+ yo design. Arguably it's not the best anymore. Walther, Bleiker, and Grunig are winning the medals at the Olympics and World Championships, not Anschutz.

To add a little more, the 54.30 barrel is much like the xx07 in terms of length and diameter. The barrel tenon and chamber are different. While the barrel is threaded, it has a cone breech, with what's supposed to be a new chamber.

The barrel itself is shown below.

For a look at the different configuration of the 54.30 receiver compared to the Match 5419xx receiver

Hmm. I have a 1913, and always disliked how far forward the loading port was. Prone sling shooter. Sounds like I should look at Walthers.

The kk500 loading port is much further back than the 1913 to the point many don’t have to lift their right elbow to load. Very comfortable.

I have been shooting my 1813 for 36 years and like the 5018 trigger, but the Walther triggers are definitely superior. (I have a Walther kk300 also…)

Walther triggers are better than a 5018?

I hate to hear about the trigger. I love my KK300 trigger and was hoping the 5018 that came with my 1913 would be as good or better.

Butch, For the type of shooting you will be doing, the 5018 are hard to beat. they can be adjusted to just under 2-oz in a single stage mode. I setup mines as well as the 5071-1 I use with a small ball bearing; this gives an understanding how light a release they have. the ball bearing is all the surface contact my finger needs to cause release.

Lee, thanks for the tip. My KK300 has a very tiny cylinder that is adjustable up and down and can be turned in any direction. The more I use it the more I like it.

I wish there was a good guide on how to adjust the different annie triggers. I have like 6 of various models and i know they do way more than i use them for. Some are 2 stage working as singles but the adjustments arent like id want. A good definitive setup guide would help
