6x45 w20" barrel

Curious if anyone is running or has experience with 6x45 in a 1:10 or 1:12 twist on a 20" barrel and if you can reach the 3500 fps mark with 55 grain Noslers and good accuracy? It looks like that might be a bit much to ask for that cartridge with that particular bullet and I may need to switch gears and go with 6mmAR if i'd like to handly get that velocity with that particular bullet. I'd rather run the 6x45 for brass reasons but would really like to reach that mark on speed if possible. Any input certainly appreciated.

You might be pushing your luck. Even with Benchmark, the capacity of the case may be a bit small. A compressed load would be around 27g. Hodgdons suggest that will do around 3000fps from a 24in with a 60g pill. I would look at the 6AR.

number72;
You might get close to your wanted FPS. I'm at 3000fps with 80grn Nosler BT bullets in my 23" 10-twist 6x45 bolt gun. I found the post below from Adam Bentley. I have great respect for Adam and his gun knowledge.

I have a well worn 20 inch 14 twist that does 3350 ish with Benchmark. It's already a case full, so there is no going up. It shoots so well that I have never had the urge to try any other powders.

Thanks John...what make of barrel is it and also curious if that speed is with a suppressor on the end?

Barrel is a Krieger. It started as a retired ppc barrel I bought from a member of this forum.

No can yet, but I've been meaning to toss it in the lathe and thread it.

Reaching that velocity with the .223 case is a stretch. Besides, most of the selected powders are inefficient and result in unburned powder due to the short barrel which is a waste no matter what velocity.

More important, accuracy should be the goal rather than just a velocity. I normally run at the upper end of most cartridge/ bullet combinations but only with an accurate load. I stay away from the whiffle ball loads for longer range target shooting.

The 6mmAR will provide a slightly better case capacity which will help you achieve your desired velocity without compression or excessive pressure.

Enjoy the process!

As mentioned AA2200 is the speediest. I have a 6TCU rifle, 1-8”,26” I will have to check speed with the 55 Nosler. Seems like the Sierra or the 58 Vmax was running faster in mine.

I have an 8 twist that's finished at 22". With 55gr CT BTs and AA2200 I was getting around 3500. I never ran it past that, accuracy was there and it was a pussycat.

Built my 6x45 in 2011.
BHW, ss, P3 1/10 twist, 20 " bbl
My go to coyote load is 28g h335, 55g varmageddon at 3053fps, suppressed.
The fastest I've shot 55s were 3300 fps. Never got faster no matter the powder.

What weight/bullet you running and what length of barrel?

Thanks Kurz...I'd like to look into the 6mmAR but have tried to reach out to Whitely both via email and phone messages but haven't heard anything back in over 2 weeks and that's the only outfit I know makin that caliber.

I apologize since I have no magic method to get anyone to answer their phone. It could be illness, family responsibilities, far too busy in the shop or a multitude of other reasons we're simply not aware of. Move on.

There are a surprising number of 6mm cartridges which have made the news in the last few years. I suggest getting back into the selection process by checking the internet for the list of 6mm cartridges specifically for the AR15 platform. There are some very interesting cartridges available although some require necking down and fireforming.

Here is one cartridge in 250 count bags:

Look for the 6mm Fat Rat which should also make your specifications. There is a lot of information on the internet. Look around and make a list for comparison.

Regards.

Thanks Kurz I've been reloading for several years now but fairly new to the wildcat game and trying to explore options that would give me most simplicity and also try and get to what I'd like in speed with 55-70 grainers in a short(er) barrel if possible. The 6mmAR looked appealing for those reasons and I know the next step up is the 6mmAR Turbo but that requires fire forming and I really want to avoid that is possible as it's just another step. I'll take a look at the Fat Rat as well but also appreciate ya forwarding that brass link from Midway...that's a heck of a price for Nosler brass!

These days it's especially important to check on the resources before committing to a new cartridge, wildcat or not. I saw that price and felt it was very worthwhile to pass along as others are doing here.

Enjoy the hunt!

I just re-barreled a Ruger American 350 into a 6 x45. My rate keeps going up with H322 with poor results at 23-24.5. Now getting close to dime size groups at with 25.5 to 26gr. Been too damn windy here in Northern Michigan to really be serious. That’s with 58gr VMax.
