Lets see those hunting rifles

Short range hunter. 308 Win AR10. 20 inch barrel was harvested from a long take off 10T Krieger FTR tube. Ammo, meplatted M118 LRs. Precision half minute at 200 yards.

Since field firing positions will be over overgrown shrubs, and grass, have to zero the rifle off a tripod, either in sitting or standing. Hunting range 235 to 340 yards

After range session, I had to machine new handles to replace the plastic ones for the tripod head.

Over the last few days I've looked through this entire thread and the thing that stands out is no mention of using the Ruger No.1 or No.3 for big game or varmint hunting. I know not many of us use them for colony varmints but I think they are used for big game hunting. Mine are built for bench shooting prairie dogs but the last few years have only shot ground hogs and coyotes here in Indiana. After shooting the usual 40 to 55gr .22 bullets at prairie dogs for over 20 years I got a taste of long range shooting with my first .204 Wasp with the 40gr V-Max at over 4000 fps. First time out with it I had several hits over 500 yards with 2 hits at 634 yards. I went with a Shilen 8" twist .224 barrel for my last build to try for a 1000 yard PD but have came up short with a longest hit of 915 yds.

Ruger No.3, Shilen #7HV 8" twist 27" length, my wildcat .219DW PDK(30-30 1.900 case length,35 degree shoulder, neck .250 dia .270 long) Kepplinger set trigger 1.25 lb. unset 10 oz. set, 6.5-20x40 Leupold.
Left case ready to fireform with 53gr V-Max right case my long range load with 34.0gr H4350 and 75gr A-Max Fed 210M at 3200 fps.

Shooting PDs across the pond at 5-600 yards with the long range No.3 on prairie just North of the Missouri river in Montana. The other No.3 was set on table for the picture. I was alternating rifles to keep barrels cool. It's my second .204 Wasp and has 11" twist Pac Nor target weight barrel. Was shooting the 39gr Blitzking at 3900 fps at dogs off to the left out to about 400 yds.
My first .204 Wasp is a No.1 with 11" twist Kreiger barrel to shoot 39-40gr bullets. Couldn't resist the low price of the 32gr Z-Max. The case is 30-30 1.770 length with 30 degree shoulder and .232 Dia. .250 long neck.
My pictures are out of order but you can see that it will shoot.

Pictures out of order again, top one is the No.1 that I had rebarreld to .204 Wasp. It was a .225 WW when I bought it used and put the 15X Unertl on it. I like to show it because I always thought it looked like a real prairie dog killer and it was.

It is good to see someone shooting the single shot Ruger's. I have a red pad #1V in 25-06 that I need to pull out and take hunting. They are beautiful rifles.

Here is one by Alex, I think I got it about this time last year or a little before. .17-.204

Sure, Borden alpine dlc coated, lilja barrel stainless 9 twist, at 21” I believe, trigger tech diamond, McMillan stock, I believe the game warden, maybe Alex would remember. This is setup for 30gr bullets, it’s specifically for coyotes. I’m currently using the old Berger 30gr match that they don’t make anymore, I found 400 at a gunstore. I usually use the 30gr Blackhole bullets and they work good, I’ve also used the 30gr Nagel bullets and they work good also. The magic happens at about 4000fps, I try to find accuracy around there. In this instance I’m using n550 and it ends up being about 3950 or so. Norma 204 brass necked down I end up with a loaded round about .197 and the reamer is .200. One thing I’ve fought a little is getting that ~4000fps because I run shorter barrels so they aren’t so long with a suppressor. The normal powders don’t get me there. It is a fairly short range gun meant for calling, generally 350 yards or less but last year I did get one at 470.

Couple of the toys I like using for hunting and plinking gophers
Kreieghoff is a 30R Blaser (7.62x68R), 24" bbls, Z61-6x24 on Recknagle swingoff, uses a Recknagle peep and a Leupold 2.5 Deltapoint as well as well as the regular irons, which has a truglo pin in the front sight.
1885 is a Browning in 223, had the Leupold 6.5-20x40AO on it, changing that out to 4-16x44 30mm Sightron STac3 FFP Mrad soon as rings arrive.
Stevens is a 044-1/2 action, 24" RKS barrel in 218Bee
Also have a newer Win 1885 in 300H&H with a Zeiss 4.5-14 z800 Conquest MC on it
A mid 80's Rem700 in 7-08 on a McMillan fibregrain w/Triggertech and a 2-7x33 Leupold
A Ruger #1 in 7-08 w/Z3 3.5-10x42 BRH
A Merkel K1 in 7RM , at the moment, no scope
A Tikka western special T3Xlite ODG in 6.5CM 24" with a Zeiss 3-9x40 Z600 Conquest MC on it, that I pulled from the Merkel.
A CZ457AT-one on the way, it will wear a Tract Toric 4-20x44
A Tikka TAC A1 6.5cm 24" wearing a Delta Stryker 4.5-30x56
