Weatherby Choice for hunting?

I might mention that I have “aged” and I don’t shoot the big cartridges anymore. My old Weatherby could be had, for a price, if you’re interested. It’s a sweet gun that I don’t shoot. Seems a waste to let it sit in the safe. I bought it used, 40 years ago. I shot it maybe 50 rounds over the years. I bought it because it was an original European Gun with a nice look. I can dig it out and take pics if it’s of interest.

After all this, I might just get 30-06 and call it good!

Looks like 300Wby is the winner if I go that route.
Buy a Tikka, T-3 X Lite, in .30-06, 7mm Rem Mag or, .270 WSM and SAVE,.. your,.. Shoulder !
Save the $$$'s and buy a GOOD scope and MORE Ammo !
You will, MOST Probably,.. "shoot" better, to Boot !
ALL 3 with, the "right" Slugs, will Stomp an Elk, out to,.. 6-700 Yards,.. IF,.. you do, your part !
I've owned,.. THREE,.. German, Wby, Mk-V's,..
I enjoyed, the .270 Wby,.. the Most & the 7mm next.
The .300 Wby's, UN-less "Braked",.. Recoil,.. IS,.. HARSH !

No mention of the Creedmoor? Astounding! ( Just kidding) My thoughts on the 300 Weatherby, from personal experience as a 30 year old shooter: It was more of a push than a slam. When I shot it as a 50 year old, it was stout, but not as harsh as my Remington 1886 Miroku in 45/70. With it’s steel but plate, it turned my shoulder black and blue!

Oof, yeah, you definitely need to tuck those curved steel buttplates in. If you touch it off on the ball of your shoulder, you’ll know it. BTDT.

I’ve a 30-378 and surprisingly, the felt recoil isn’t bad at all - has a brake though. It’s LOUDER than he-double toothpics though. Mine is a SS accumark with a fiberglass/amrid stock that came with a really good recoil pad. It’s a 10# gun with the scope though. My boy’s M70 in 30-06 w/ brake seems worse than the 30-378.

If you reload I'd pick the 300 Wby otherwise the Win mag. The higher end Vanguard's are excellent rifles.
Forged 1 pc bolt / reciever, Sako type extractor, piller bedded ect. Easily my favorite hunting rig.
Older 300 Wby RC Vanguard..... trigger job / free-floated barrel. 180 smk, 208 eldx factory....mag length.

Many people can not shoot a 300 Weatherby well due to recoil, as the recoil is a very fast snap, jolt to your neck and head. This is NOT a fun gun to shoot, and takes some discipline to shoot well.

Having a Gentry muzzle break added where the ports are slanted forward would help tremendously.

Triggers on the Mark 5 are not adjustable like the Vangaurd action trigger.

A friend killed 6 Bull elk with a Mark 5 in 257 Weatherby shooting Factory ammo, then different guide told him he was not shooting an elk rifle.

The 257 Weatherby was Roy Weatherby's favorite caliber, and you may want to give that some consideration with it's very modest recoil. The 257 Weatherby is a fun gun to shoot. Custom rifles with minimal throat using hand loads are incredible tack driving rifles in this caliber.

I think the 340 Wby is one of the best Wbys. The recoil unbraked isn't bad, and it has a lot of flexibility with all the various 338 cal bullets available. The 300 Wby is second in my mind. I was able to get a customers Mk5 shooting .625 at 3000 fps with 212 ELDXs.

That said, the Weatherby cartridges really aren't the best available anymore, and the freebore takes out the ability to tune with seating depth.

Well, I have no decision as of yet.

I still may go with a 30-06 MarkV I found - I already have all the '06 reloading goodies.
Although not mentioned here, the LGS has a 270WBY and plenty of in-stock ammo, which makes it attractive also. I could buy 100 rounds and start loading after a 'break-in' period.

I have a markV ultra light '06 stainless. It is nice to carry , aims well, great reliability. Unless I am hunting the broad side of a barn I would choose something else.
Everything about that rifle is great except for accuracy.
