Any love for fixed scopes?

Hi folks,

after being a long time proponent of variable scopes I find myself enjoying fixed mag optics more and more.

2.5x28 Leupold Scout scope on a 44 mag lever action

4x36 Zeiss Diatal with a duplex reticle (West German and all)

8x56 Swarovski Kurtz number 4 ret with illuminated centre dot

surprisingly, really enjoying using these. I have traded quite a few variables but keep those scopes.

anyone else enjoy fixed scopes?

Scrummy

YES!! For bench shooting out to 100 + yards, nothing but 32 to 36 Fixed Power. Works for me.
And the reason for my high "fixed power" scopes? I want to see the holes being made in the targets. ;)

Horses for courses. 6x on the '06 huntin' rifle. Old Weaver 10x, in cracking condition on the .222, 6x Kolmorgan Bearcat in the cupboard ( needs a clean...) 10x Bushnell "Tactical" as a spare ( it's a nice little scope, don't want to part with it) all the rest Zoomy.

Leupold 2.5x28mm FX II "Scout" scope -- on a Marlin 1894P .44mag with XS Lever Scout mount, for shots under <125yds. Just about perfect.

variable for me on hunting rifles as different conditions require different magnifications. I use a 1.5-4 on my 45 70 and higher on some other rifles

Forget hunting, that's easy. Within reason anything will do 99 percent of the time. How about a straight 60 x target scope. Bigger FOV and brighter. Walk around your next shoot and see what percentage are turned down other than maybe 5x because at max power they darken. Usually none. Also a lower price.

Those 10x Bushy Tacs are a hellofa scope for $150 when they were available. I'd like to have another!

actually forget bench shooting scopes, that is easy. Hunting requires very specific needs

You can apply my exact same thought to hunting. Straight power, brighter, bigger field of view . Of course back to hunting since that seems to be your object, Jack Oconner shot more species and more total legal animals than 99 percent of all hunters. He often said there was no need for anything over a 4x scope out to 400 yds. I sorta say that's fine but I would bump it to 6x. But, I have killed many deer in Pa mostly in the woods with a straight 12x Leupold. So what are your specific needs Dub that can not be bought on today's market?

never said I could not find what I needed on the open market. I simply stated that variable power scopes are more versatile in hunting use and the need varies.

Agreed. One of my all time favorites was a 2-7 power I ran on my .308. If I was hunting in the thick stuff it was turned down for maximum field of view. When I hit the field at the end of the day, it would get jacked up.

My first really good scope was a Weaver KT-10. I used it on a .243 for groundhogs and deer.
My current favorite is an older Leupold Mark 4 16X that has an 1/8 minute dot.
I do like the simplicity of the fixed powers. But i own plenty of variables too.
