Larry Bryant has left the range

I am really going to miss Larry. I starting shooting longrange in 2016 and I will always remember my first NBRSA LR Nationals at Sacramento in 2017. I was shooting next to some tall slender guy with a beard and I quickly learned he loved big calibers. If I recall correctly he shot a 300wsm in LG and when it came time for shooters to switch their guns for HG he pulled out a rifle bigger than I had ever seen. It was a 300 Norma mag shooting 200+ grain berger and lapua bullets and he looked at me, smiled, and said "son you better grab ahold of your balls when I fire this thing!" :) I wasn't sure what to think at that moment but it didn't take me long to realize Larry was a great person and without a doubt one of the most encouraging and supportive people I have ever met in the sport. He was always willing to help me and so many others improve and was one of the first to congratulate you when you did well. When he found out I was making bullets a couple years back he set down with me and told me he had a friend named Clay Spencer he would like to introduce me to. He even volunteered to fly back east with me so I could meet him and ask any questions I had. Like so many other times, I wish I had taken him up on his offer, not so much to gain the knowledge but instead to spend more time with Larry and hear a few more dozen stories about elk surveys and hunting or calibers he had played with. RIP Larry. I will always cherish the good times we shared at matches.

I met Larry and his daughter LaShonda at Nationals at Deep Creek several years ago. They set up their camping spot right beside us. It didn’t take long to realize they were good caring people and Larry didn’t hesitate to share his opinion on anything! I got to see him and LaShonda at a couple more matches in WV. I had been in contact with Lashonda and they had planned on attending Nationals in Deep Creek again this year. Unfortunately, Larry wasn’t doing well and they didn’t make it.

I lost my mom in March so I know what LaShonda is going through and we have been texting a little about Larry. There’s not much I can do with the miles between us except pray for her and the rest of Larry’s family.

This year has really taught me that although we may like to compete at rifle matches, what’s more important than match results are the people we meet and the friends we make along the way. I know my priorities have changed at matches. The results are now secondary. The funny thing is I’m shooting better now that I focus more on people instead of targets. Life is short. Make the most of it.

Please pray for Lashonda and the rest of Larry’s family.

Dave.
