Powder choices for a suppressed AR-15

The action gets dirty in my AR-15 223 when using my suppressor. Any suggestions for a clean burning powder for a 223 with Hornady 53 gr VMAX'S? Dennis

What are you using at the moment? Usually, the higher-pressure loads for any given powder tend to burn the cleanest.

I'd try some IMR 8208XBR for a start. It's the cleanest-burning powder I've ever used in a gas gun & so far the most accurate too in three difffernt rifle cartridges I shoot.

I'd advise caution though if you're working towards a 'low-end' load for sub-sonic or just above. It's really dense stuff & as such even at normal load levels there'll be extra case capacity that's best left unfilled. Leave too much space trying to lower velocity could lead to unintended consequences.

Word.

2015BR and Reloader 10x are very close to Benchmark too... VV133 also.

You need an adjustable gas block, the suppressor is overgasing the weapon.
+1, the set up is wrong with your current gas block, going with an adjustable gas block will allow you to optimize the rifle for both suppressed and unsuppressed loads.

However going with your original question, try Benchmark, 8208XBR and/or N133. All 3 of these are very clean and will work great with the 53's your shooting.

Thanks for all the good info. I'll try Benchmark. The adjustable gas block is something I need to try also. I was thinking I would need to go with a piston drive to clean things up. Dennis

I shoot suppressed and used to have an adjustable gas block. It didn't do anything to reduce the extra fouling in my case in my experience. I got rid of the adj. gas block: another unneeded complication.

The guys who have them seem to spend an inordinate amount of time fiddling with them.

What powder have you been using?
