Modied Berger 105s for Prairie dogs

I finally checked into the Tubb Nose Engraver. Wow! Should do the job perfectly! By creating a ring, where the jacket would be paper thin, the bullet should turn into a giant HP IMMEDIATELY, just like a ballistic tip does (if the target bullet uses a thin jacket, you'll really be in business). And instead of inducing greater BC variance by opening up and filing target bullets, this tool should actually improve upon that.

So you found the tool available?

Can you provide a link please.

Not available for retail yet. Soon apparently. I found thread on another forum whereby he was shooting p-dogs with David Tubb and he was apparently experimenting with making different cuts. And found he needed to make a pretty significant cut to get desired frangibility

Even tho 6mm B105Hs in my dasher reach out there better, like 204 Ruger caliber with H32V and S39BKs best——fast, flat, mist, cart wheels, back flips.
Yeah, so many things work well IMO. Fun to try different things. Certainly my 6x47, and 25x47 I'm working on will not be ideal high-volume rigs, but I plan to give-a-go on the windy days. Certainly, 20cal would be better 90% of the time!

And, I've shot thousands of sage rats and prairie dogs with my 20 tac, pushing the 39Bkings and 40-vmax at 3,910FPS...works VERY well. BUT, personally, if I could only have one, it's be my fast twist 6BR...mostly because I like hitting them hard and the barrel life always gets me 7000+ rounds with extreme accuracy. I'm, pushing 58-vmax at same velocity (3900 fps); personal field testing and radar testing by Applied Ballistics indicate the 20 cal 40max is only .18 G1 BC higher (which is much lower than claimed) compared with 58-vmax. The 40 vamx is a touch higher than 58vmax, but the 58 still hits 'em significantly harder! Only negative would be added recoil, but that's not problem for me since it's a 23lb bench gun. BUUUT, I could certainly see where people would prefer the 20s, and I get why so many people love the little 20 VARTARG, which is what I'd recommend for anyone who could only have 1 gun...but when my barrels get hot, I just pick up another gun. They all work.

Reason for my big bullet/big calibers...first two days of a prairie dog shoot last year were sustained 20mph winds, and I could either stay in my room, or go shoot. I chose to shoot. My Leica 3200.com + Kestral 5700 combo has been been a gamechanger too, but I can't wait to put the .34G7 25 cal bullets to the test.

I called Tubb (not David) a few days ago inquiring about the tool. Was told it would be available in a month and cost $800!
Also have to sign an agreement that you won't modify bullets for someone else. I think they meant to sell them but not sure.

What a bargain

I am guessing there is significant liability risk involved in this somewhere.

He is building and selling a tool to change a bullet from it's manufactured state. I'm not sure he would want you to change anyones bullets but his own. I know I sure as hell wouldn't.

When I was making benchrest bullets for my own use, I tried various size of HP for use on p. dogs, ground squirrels, and coyotes. When you make bullets, you just do not point up the jacket to it's full potential, kinda like partially full length sizing brass.

If you trim back the meplat to where a .070 piece of wire goes in the hole, bullets open better. In fact, I made 65g 6mm bullets that did not explode on the surface and the vast majority of time did not exit the coyote.

Otherwise, a 6 Rem or 6 Rem AI shooting the 87g Vmax in a 10 twist is a nice option and using AA2700 that has one of the very coolest heat index factors, your barrel life will shock you. No flies on a 243 AI with a 87g V max with AA2700, cci 250 seals the deal.

Personally, I would have no interest in shooting a bullet that does not expand on p. dogs. Flip flops, helicopters, spinners, and flying dogs is where the fun is at!

Im sure he meant modify for other people or retail. I would sign the waver but would not pay more than $300... for the nosering cutting tool.

I'm with you. If the Tubb tool turns out ro be too expensive,, I'll go back to plan A.

I haven't yet shot them on critters, but I opened up a bunch of bullets with micro-drill bit...I think I was able to use a .065 bit, which opened up the meplat without affecting the outside diameter or bullet profile...so BC shouldn't be impacted...and "should" be more frangible, in theory, than simply trimming the meplat, due to having paper thin jacket at the leading edge.

RAG, just for giggles and grins, putting a loaded round in a Wilson case holder and trimming the meplat is not such a big deal with the key being to trim to the exact same length on every bullet and the bullets have to be seated the exact same depth....some sorting would be in order.

The Berger 108 gr. Elite Hunters,.. ARE available at,.. Powder Valley and Midsouth Shooters !
Yesterday, anyway,.. NOT sure about,.. Today ( LOL ).
.559 BC and "shoot's",.. Awesome ( .2's to 3's ) in my 6 XC with, a little "Jump" and 41.3 grs of, Staball 65, CCI pr's,
( Near Max, but, SAFE,.. IN MY,.. Rifle ). 3,000 FPS approx. from, a 24" Bbl. Always, "work up",.. CAREFULLY !

Hmmm. I could give that a try!

Rag, I cut 68g Bergers back to the point to where they would whistle going through they air! When I shot ground squirrels, the squirrel just disappeared, totally detonated! We would walk out and try to find the squirrels and perhaps would find part of a spine attached to the rug!
