I'm just curious here, but I've been looking at custom actions, under $1000, for my Remington 700 build, and I've noticed that the majority of custom actions in that range are 1 1/16 x 20 (Savage tenon dementions). Why are there so few that are threaded for the Remington tenon ( 1 1/16 x 16)?

I worked with one manufacturer and suggested that since his bolt face and general layout would work with savage drop in barrels, that he use 20 pitch threads, since there is no disadvantage. As a result buyers have one more option for barreling. BTW Shilen offers their highest grade of barrels this way, and you can furnish your own reamer.
The BAT action blueprint is a 1/8 x16 thread. Remington is 1 1/16 x16

Most of the Bats are 1.062x18. My 3 different Kelbly's were 1.062x18, as were the 3 or 4 Stillers.

lot of actions being made to utilize the barrel nut system using savage thread dimensions or Remington thread specs for "pre-fit" barrels.

I have one of the Viper Lapua actions and love it. You get a R700 footprint, tenon, threads and compatibility along with precision machined interchangeable bolt heads. Many choices on bolt fluting and bolt knob and the price is well UNDER your $1k budget.
Did I mention the people there are fantastic?

Hardly inexperienced but they can tell you their story. I met them at a match and got a lot of questions answered and then had a couple of very informative phone calls with them. Solid people making a solid product.
They are located in southern Georgia.
I can't find any reviews on their actions. How do they compare to the tenacity or stiller tac-30 or the like?

As far as comparisons you mention, I have never been behind any Defiance action so I can't speak to their (especially the Tenacity) quality. I do, however, own a Stiller Tac30AW. Comparing them feature for feature I can say the Stiller is likely to be above the $1,000 price tag you want to hold. The Stiller I own is a nice action; smooth operation and never an issue with anything breaking. The Stiller is, IME, rather plain looking compared to the Kauger. Kauger offers a myriad of options for bolt fluting style and bolt knob at no extra cost. The recoil lug on both is pinned which makes for easier barrel changes. Both use the standard R700 style action wrenches. I switched my Stiller from 260 Remington over to 6.5PRC a couple years ago. I waited several months for a new bolt body and it cost over $550. With the Kauger I could have spent under $75 for a new bolt head. The Kauger extraction system may be the best out there. Dual extractors have made extraction and ejection a breeze with my big 338LM cases (even loaded rounds).
As I said already, the best option is to call Kauger and they will happily answer any questions you have.
