Budget 10/22 position rifle that's accurate

Over a long cold Winter I put together a 10/22 position rifle just for fun to see if I could get lucky and get it to shoot, on the cheap. I replaced the stock barrel with a Green Mountain (not exactly a high $$ barrel but low cost was a goal). The trigger had to go, so I figured why not modify it and if I screw it up who cares as I’m going to replace it anyway. It actually turned out “good enough.” In no way in the class of a top end position rifle (Walther, Bleiker, etc) but again, low cost was the goal. The stock was a maple laminate prone style from Richards Microfit bargin bin. I put in a rail for a handstop and an adjustable cheek and butt, then bedded the barrel/action. I scoped it since it was easier than trying to fit iron sights and bloop tube. Below is a fairly typical group at 100 yards prone with a sling (target is a MR31 which is a 600 yard reduced for 100). I forgot the magazine so I had to break position after every shot to single load the 10/22. Wind was slightly left to right. I’d like to see what a benchrest guy could do. I expect my high $$ small bores to shoot like this but didn’t think a 10/22 could, especially on the cheap (under $800 including scope (yeah cheap scope too)). Anyway, shots go on call and it's fun to shoot.

looks like you got it shootin pretty nice! I sat at bench and tried to feed my 10-22 one round at a time. It didnt work so good lol Post up another target after you shoot magazine fed. I'd like to see if any differences in accuracy.

You didn't say what ammo you were shooting at 100, but it must've been a decent lot of some pretty decent match ammo - that's some good shooting from prone, especially since you had to break position after every shot to load. I'm starting to become a believer in those GM bbls after seeing your group & several others shot with pre-fit GM bbls on a Zermatt RimX bolt rifle.

Love my, 20 Inch, Green Mountain "Sporter" Barrel, on my 10/22 Ruger !
With, SK Std. Plus or, Wolf Match Extra, it shoots, sub 1/2 Inch at, 50 Yards !
Shoots Win HP's about, 5/8ths inch and Kills Sage Rats out to,.. 85 -90 Yards !
You won't find, a better Barrel for, the Price of,.. a GM bbl !

Good point! I went back and looked at previous targets (I keep all my targets (geeky I know), shot with the mags and they looked good. If loading from the mags is an issue its small but I want to keep an eye on it. Probably easier for a benchrester to notice but I'm going to keep watching.

Ammo was CenterX. Not my best lot (going by my match rifles) but this rifle/barrel seems to like it just fine! I never thought a GM barrel would shoot this good but, like you, I'm starting to become a believer to.

I updated my 1022 a few times - replacing everything except the stripped receiver a few times. Very accurate now - currently has a lilja tube. I'll never change that one.

Don’t mean to put you on the spot, so feel free to ignore my question, would you rank GM in the same league as Douglas and Wilson?
I've had 5-6 GM 223 barrels - they all shot small groups. Putting benchrest accuracy aside, my understanding is they are as accurate as, say, Kieger or Bartlein but the chance of a not as good barrel is higher with GM.
When they are in stock, their Gunsmith specials are a great deal if you do your own barrel work.
