CCI 450 vs 41 in a 6BR

So, had ordered some CCI-450's (5,000) from a usually reputable shop (name excluded here until I get a chance to talk to them about this), and when they arrived, they were CCI-41's. I've done some interwebs searching, and see that they are at least very similar, though the 41's seem to be made with a "tougher" cup(?).

My question is, do you all think it's worth giving them a go, or are they just the wrong primer for my application? What's my application? Well, here you go:
  • Savage 12 6BR, 30" barrel
  • Varget powder, Lapua cases, Berger 105's (mostly BT 24428's)
  • I shoot Benchrest and Palma matches
  • Distances vary from 200-600 yards
I have no problem going through a load workup to test out and develop the 41's, I'm just interested to see if anyone has tried this in a similar situation. Seems most everything I could find on the web was centered more around AR-type guns.
 
I have used them in the past, in fact, I still have a 1000 or so. I have used them in all my small primer bolt gun cartridges, from my 221FB to my 308 including all my BR’s. They all went bang, my results were very similar to the 450’s. Let’s face facts, no gun can produce a single 5 shot bug hole group every time. They were designed for the AR’s due to there free floating firing pins. I think you got a great deal, I would have loved to have gotten in on that one.

You ended up with primers that are typically harder to find and more expensive than what you ordered.

I don’t find them to be more difficult for a factory rifle to ignite, but I get slightly higher Sd’s with them, relative to BR-4’s.

They are unquestionably the strongest primer I’ve ever used and for some exotic loads, such as the heaviest bullets in .308 with Palma brass, the only ones I would consider starting with.

Hmmmm... Definitely not looking for higher SD's :)
 
I've been playing with them recently. I believe you have to seat them deeper than others to properly set the anvil; there are other dimensional changes besides just the cup thickness. I was getting higher SDs with them until I started playing with seating depth, and then the SDs fell back where they should be.

They are thicker and significantly harder to ignite than any other primer I've used. You'll know real fast if you've got a case with more shoulder bump than the others.

Accuracy wise, once you get the depth figured out, they'll shoot like a 400/450/BR4 would.

Generally speaking, I would prefer CCI 400s or 450s over the 41s due to the easier ignition, but they'll get the job done.
 
I should be more specific so as to not give the wrong impression on the difference. At 1,000 on e-targets that measure the bullet’s velocity, (which is probably not your plan for a 6BR) I get about 8.0 SD with BR-4’s and about 12.0 with 41’s, with a certain .308 load.

But to keep that in perspective, plenty of 199’s and 200’s are shot at 1,000 with SD’s on the target higher than 12.

Edit, I agree with Mike it takes a harder strike to ignite them, but all Savage 12 factory bolts I have used have so much spring tension in excess of what is required, that they do not misfire them.

I should also clarify. I was seeing higher SDs at the muzzle with 41s until I got the depth right.

I used to not adjust my CPS, and it would have no problem with CCI400s/BR4s/GM205Ms etc. all at the same depth. When I started playing with the 41s, my 308 and 6BRA were posting muzzle SDs above 10fps regularly, and these guns are usually right around 5FPS SDs across all load dev workup (i.e. just inherently low/good numbers).

That’s good info on the SD going down with deeper seating. Deeper seating would also have the benefit of helping ensure a faster, harder strike for any marginal bolts out there.

Your correct. I have used them without any problems but never tried using them for 1000 br because I always had plenty of 205’s 400’s 450’s and br4’s but if needed I have lots of 41’s
