22rf twist rates

I have, to now, simply stayed with the standard 16 inch twist for 22LR and it has worked well. I have a CZ 452 which, while it is reasonably accurate out to 100 meters, it is not nearly as good as my other rifles and, at longer ranges, it actually keyholes so, I'm thinking of re-barreling it. I am contemplating going with a 14 or even a thirteen twist. Has anyone worked with a slightly faster twist for a 22LR and what were your results? My plan is to get a gain twist which starts at 18 and finishes at 13 or fourteen at 24" but, for the purposes of this discussion, we can ignore the gain twist part. WH

Will, I spoke with someone from Bartlien about a gain twist rimfire barrel a couple years ago & I believe he said the gain was either .5 or 1 & thats all they could do. You'd have to contact a mfg to be sure.
I don't think they can gain the 5 you're looking for.
The whim went away but am still curious about gain twist rimfire barrels for sure.

The fellow I am getting this barrel from can cut almost anything. A 6.5 I have goes from 24 to 8 inches in 24 inches. A 308 goes from 16 to 13.5. I don't, generally speaking, like too much gain although the 6.5 shoots very well. Like I said, the plan for this one is to start around 18 and go to 13 at 24 inches in length. WH

Since, .22 LR Powders have, thoroughly Burned, in 16 - 18 inches of, Barrel length, I'd look at,..
a Gain Twist, Barrel of, 17 down to 14. That, would be worth experimenting with, in a 20" - 22" Max. length, Med hvy, barrel and using a Bentz Chamber for, Long Range ! But just,.. IMHO of course !

I have begun writing a paper with findings of my experiments with fast, rf, LH, gain twist but at this point in my experimenting I'm going to hold off posting most of my comments. I have several rifles that I have installed barrels made by RKS- most of the actions are vintage or vintage copies of single shots I have made either from a casting or a billet of 8620.
One of the advantages I see with a twist faster than the 1:16 is the 40grain bullet seems to remain "more" stable in windy conditions especially 200 to 500 yards. The gain is a novelty that I can't prove or disprove yet - but in theory, the bullet is in a constant state of change in rotational acceleration and it's state of "sleep" doesn't occur until it exits.
Comparing performance of a similar rifle with a uniform twist, 1:16 rate, the average group is generally larger. When shot through a un-backed sheet of thin paper stretched tight over a frame, bullets shot from slower straight twist barrels show indication of destabilization at approximately 185 yards. Same situation from faster, gain twist indicate very little destabilization - even at 400 yds.
My comments will end here, except I would like to respond to Lefty, I have gradually increased my barrel length on my builds. If the barrel has be prepped accordingly, rule of thumb is one shot for every inch of barrel following a cleaning to disperse the lube evenly, yes the powder was all consumed early on, but I haven't seen any deceleration as many claim, in fact a miniscule opposite occurred. One consistent change I have seen is the SD continued to improve until my barrels reached 30" in length. (my rifling machine is limited to 31.5" and Ron gets grumpy if you ask for a 22rf much over 30")
Will, I'd like to hear what path you choose and your results. Hopefully, I'll have time to conclude some of my projects in the next couple years and give the hornets nest here and a couple other places a good smack with a short stick.

Young feller, Mr Will Henry has been around the turnip patch for many years and ain't fallen off the truck yet. I would venture to say he has barreled and smithed more rifles than 90% of the fellers on this forum.

I do have an 8 groove, gain twist, with a LH twist from Bartlein. Had it for a few years and haven't shot it. If you search this forum, you will see where Mr Green played with it on his personal rifle. I'm sure he would share his experience.
