Grouping issue

Not at all if
Is this common,
Not at all if you're starting at ¼" then going to 2". Then you clean and it returns to ¼" for the next 5"
Even with NO rear bag I don't buy it.
Just check if anything is touching the barrel. A ¼' shooter doesn't switch to 2" and then back to ¼" coincidently.
I don't buy the bag at all but I do think maybe the cool down mechanically and mentally may be a factor.
I've never owned a rifle that had to be cleaned after 5 shots to shoot consistently.

I have to add this: IF you have a friend who shoots let him try and see if he duplicates what is happening to you.

As stated in my OP I'm very new to rifle precision shooting, so there is still a lot that I don't know. I brought the rifle to a local br match and towards the end of the match I got a buddy to shoot the rifle to see how it shot for him. After a few shots we talked about my setup, basically everything I was doing was wrong, from my front rest setup, to the bullets I was running (low coefficient). Once I've finished modifying and revamping everything I'll update you guys, but I'm pretty sure that's why I was shooting inconsistent groups. Thanks for all the input guys.

Let's think outside the box. What if he stops shooting to clean, but doesn't clean at all, just lets the gun sit for the same time it takes to clean it? I.e. let the gun cool down with no other actions taken. (When you cool and clean a rifle, you're actually tweaking two variables at once, violating the prime troubleshooting directive.)

If everything you do is wrong and your equipment is crap, how do you shoot 1/4 inch 5 shot groups every time you clean? Think about it. Something is happening as the barrel warms and corrected when it cools.

That is a good question. But, 5 shots from a br....not much heat yet either. Could well be a lack of focus after the first group magnified by poor bench manners.

Something about minds thinking alike? Perhaps because I grew up about 20 miles from your home.

It's the systems engineer in me. I haven't done anything to change the world, but I am pretty good at debugging complex systems, mainly by applying divide et impera.

In a rifle with no bedding problems, sure. But there's still a box needing checked off in a list of possible causes, and there's obviously evidence that the rifle is fine dead cold, sooo ...
