178 Amax jump?

Looking to save a little on components with a seating depth test and hopefully start somewhere around a known good distance to lands, what jump have you found best for the 178 amax? Will be shot in a 1917 with a new barrel and magazine is plenty long so I should be able to reach the lands no problem, although I do not intend to shoot them jammed.

A-Max bullets in .223, .284 and .338 like to jump 0.030", but shoot well with any jump; there wasn't a strong dependence. I would expect .308 bullets to behave the same way. By the way, I tested from touch to 0.080" but didn't jam them.

Good info, thank you. I never shot much of the Amax bullets, but have a box inbound and thought I'd give them a go.

They seemed in my recent testing to like .030-.080. Groups grew when it got longer than .100 and pressures were too tall very much below .030.

What I recently found that surprised the hell out of me, .510 750gr A-Max in an AX50 liked .200-.300 jump. Yeah, it's like a mile long jump and it hated <.200 A LOT.

They need to jump a long way....
Like 300 miles...
From Grants Pass to Stockton.
Going in the mail tomorrow.
I'm thinking you'll find a sweet spot between .020-.030 off.

Not to get ya to excited, but there's a 4x3 with eye guards and a healthy 3x3 running around my place.
Trial cams going up this week.
Allex here's a couple back yard bucks for you think about.
If the opportunity arises I will let the air outta the 4x3 lol

The AMAX are not really jump sensitive. They can jump a long way but if loading I always tried to load them at .020" off as I do now with the ELDs but as mentioned they can jump out to .1 and still shoot good.

Thanks all, once I get them I'll see where the lands are compared to mag length, and probably start at .020 off and work back a little. Thankfully I have a Wilson seating die and arbor press I can take to the range to do my seating test.

Brett, some good looking bucks! Hoping to see something nice and maybe find a bear, too! Looking forward to this fall so we can get tromping through the brush together!

Yeah if you will be limited by mag length then just load to mag length and work back from there if it’s long enough to do so.

Also another bullet to look at that is 178 BTHP. Not overly expensive but good accuracy and easy to load.

Its an eddystone 1917, so its very long magazine and a 0 freebore chamber on a brand new barrel with about 200 rounds on it. I plan on a small ladder test based around my 175smk load, so hopefully with this info and my current load data I can get this worked up well enough in 25-30 rounds max.

The reason for bullet choice is Brett had them and I'm in CA and normally shoot copper bullets for hunting and am almost out, so a box of bullets for hunting Oregon this fall is fine for me.

I threw you a few extra that I had already sorted for my 06'.

Yep
I shoot the 178 at mag length in my 308 5R Mil-Spec with a looong throat, amazing accuracy and great terminal damage at 308 velocities.

I stop development when I get 1/2 MOA (10-shot groups) - no need for better than that in NRA Highpower and Long Range.
I would call that more than good. I will be careful and not say amazing anymore, but good shooting!!
I have not done 10 shot groups with my 5R, I need to see what happens.
I have been getting under 1/2" groups consistantly, sometimes just an egg shaped hole.
AckleymanII, I am not a wordsmith, I will leave word definitions to the pros so I would say from this point acceptable and better than most the bullets I have tried in that rifle.

I got the bullets from Brett, need to find the lands with them, will do that tonight and load up a test ladder I should be able to shoot on Friday morning.

Looks like with the long magazine I can load them all the way out to touching the lands at 3.330" and still fit. Loading -0.030 keeps the BT just above the neck/shoulder junction, too. Ill start here. Pic is touch - 0.030"

Well, I found a load that is just under MOA at 54.8gr and -0.030, going 2846fps that if I really wanted would do just fine for deer, but I'll do a small seating depth test without the magneto speed attached at see how it does.
