Fortunately I know several great smiths. The last thing I would do is rest my chin on their shoulder. Do your due diligence, ship it to him, and don't bother them with emails and phone calls. If you have problems, you didn't do your due diligence.Butch
While I agree with you about location being a post office away, I prefer to personally meet anyone doing that kind of work, if at all possible.
Phone calls are one of the hardest things to cope with. I do enjoy SOME conversations with outside of our state customers, but the more time that I'm on the phone, the less time I'm at my mill, bench or lathe. When folks want me to search for obsolete parts, they don't seem to understand that that takes time and will involve my hourly rate. I'd rather have them search for the parts, and me, spend the time I need to spend at my bench.
