At my mother's home in Lewiston, Idaho is a weird thistle. The plant is about 3 feet tall, but is leafiest toward the ground, and sports enormous lower leaves, with a curious color pattern. As shown a bottom leaf is 16 inches wide. The flower up top looks like a common Canadian ("bull") thistle, of which I've seen millions, but this plant seems to be a different species. Anyone seen one like it and knows what it is?

Looks like a mature Scotch Thistle.
Hmmm. I don't see much resemblance. All leaves shown are much smaller and narrower, having a different shape and no striking color pattern, and the plant overall is comparatively tall and narrow, similar to most Canadian thistles I've seen. But I'll consider it, thanks.

If it's anything like Canadian thistles give it a dose of round-up. I have a constant battle in our camp fields trying to eliminate them and I always loose the battle. The seeds can stay dormant in the ground and still be viable for germination for over 20 years. So you may have a long fight ahead of you.

Water it well then carefully dig it out and get all it’s roots. Do this before it disperses its million seeds. Don’t shake it to get off all the dirt; you’ll only help it spread.

Its a milk thistle. The variegated leaves and flower shape give it away. Good for monarch butterflies as its what the caterpillars eat and will cocoon on. (Edit: its actually milkweed that butterflies like. Your plant is milk thistle.)

I thought monarchs only ate milkweed

Pull the blossoms off soon or you will wish you did.
Roundup may or may not kill it. 24D lovol ester, or amine is your best bet.
Hogs think they are cotton candy.
